Hi all.
I'm a new member and very new to these forums.
Can anyone give me advice on changing glow plugs, i.e. easiest way. Is it best to take off the inlet manifold?
Thanks,
Steve

1) Remove "decorative" plastic covers(If still fitted).
2) Undo hose on l/h side of black unit with "TURBO DIESEL" written on it.
3) Undo hose on other side, nearest to throttle body (slightly easier to refit that way).
4) Undo 2 x 10mm bolts securing "TD" unit and remove unit.
5) Undo 2 x 13mm bolts securing s/steel EGR pipe.
6) Remove Spill pipes. May as well change them too whilst you're about it. Get length of hose from auto spares outlet and cut to size, don't pay thru nose for specific cut to length kit.
7) Pull off rubber vacuum pipe from EGR, another rubber pipe on to black plastic pipe running above spill pipes, injectors etc, and the braided rubber hose on the underside of manifold along with possibly the spring secured, electrical plug (although not guaranteed to be one fitted).
8) Remove manifold nuts. (Dab of grease will stop the nuts falling out of socket)
9) Remove manifold (It's a fiddle, but it will come off).
10) Change Glo-plugs.
11) Reverse steps 10 to 1
If manifold gaskets look ok, then they should be fine to re-use.
Watch you don't trap No.4 (Sensor) injector lead under manifold when re-fitting.
Check manifold is flush before tightening bolts or you may snap off hole lugs (I did once ::)).
Main thing to remember is not to use excessive force removing or re-fitting manifold.
It's a fiddle, but it came off...so it'll go back on.
er...I think I've covered it all :-/ ...yep, pretty sure that's it. :y

sheesh the apprentice has come of age!!! nice comprehensive reply!! :y
only thing i would add is to check the braided pipe to the boost sensor very carefull as they are prone to bungng up with inlet gunge and splitting at ends!!

Use quality replacements like Beru (OEM) not the cheap ones on e-bay or you'll soon be repeating the exercise

Spot on Pitchfork ........
I found it difficult to source the manifold-to-head gaskets from Vx.
Local BMW dealer had them in stock - reasonably-priced at a few quid too!

Many many thanks, got to leave it till next monday or tuesday now but what a great help.
Thanks again,
Steve

Leak off (spill pipes) were a pain in the arse to get off on mine, get new because you may have to cut them off as I had to.
And has been said get good quality glow plugs.

Still much to learn in the ways of the Tubby Denzil, Master. :D
AntiTechno speak like...black unit with "TURBO DIESEL" written on it....Hmm ::)
Well, ya gets my drift I suppose ;D

'Techno speak' that's a new one on me ...... a good 'un though!
'Turbo Diesel' thingy is officially the 'charge-air pipe' in Vx jargon!

Might have guessed the Maesteg Tractor Centre would know :y

My biggest problem was getting off the old gaskets, looked like they were the originals from 1994 :D :D :D :D :D
I'm sure if you get stuck while your changing them someone here will talk you through it ;) I did mine with the laptop on the back seat and followed the easy steps given by oof :-*
