Today I dragged Maria around shopping a bit. Found an Autogas place in Newport, picked up a few LPG bits and peices - Olives and unions.
Also stopped by the VX stealer and picked up some spark plugs, new sump pan, and some other bits.
Stopped at B&Q, picked up a hole saw.
Then out came the tools. First job, was to find a good place in the bumper for the filler. I chose quite low down, drivers side, near the back. It was the only place I could get the pipework in behind it.
So, first job was to drill a big gaping hole in my bumper! A little daunting, but was easy enough.
Then I fitted the filler (swine) and plumbed it into the tank.
After that, went along to BP, for the first attempt at filling with LPG. Connected up the gun, so far so good. Pressed in the button... and...... ahhhhhhh.... a lovely sound, she started filling with gas.
at 44p/litre, The tank took just under 68 litres, which cost me £30 ;D 8-)
Flicked back onto LPG, and the injectors fired in again. Ran absolutely fine back to Maria's.
So, new spark plugs are to go in tomorrow, and hopefully it'll be job done :)

Oh, only one more thing, I need to adjust settings for the sender, because it was showing 3 lights when it ran out. But that's a 5 min job :y
-
great well done :y now when are you free to do mine :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/
-
i wonder why i bother with diesel :-X
-
Me too... when you can have all that V6 goodness for 40ppl ;)

yeah but do they make aftershave called LPG - :P NO SO THERE

i wonder why i bother with diesel :-X
Modern diesel cars are fantastic. I couldn't lose a golf TDI today, right up to 90.

Well I got rid of one of those on Saturday, on gas too ;D

No contest really

Fitting the switch is alway a worrying job, but then you don't take the kit back out

The led fuel gauges are pretty crap tbh James......but three leds on is a bit too far out.
Mine usually does put the red led on before running out.....
Tho how i measure distance left is, i use the trip milometer......i know i can go 125miles about town or 200 on a motorway run..... :y

You must have the fastest omega in the world Martin.

Another good thing with LPG is your spark plugs and oil will last longer ::)

In theory, but I will be sticking to the same service intervals.
Because LPG runs hotter, it actually shortens plug life..

Before I use an LPGd car..really service intervals interestingly become longer..And the oil remains clean .

Plugs do wear quicker

Plugs do wear quicker
Oh yes :y
I change mine (double electrode) every 10k :y
I think Vx recommend them being changed every 40k on petrols but 20k on dual fuels.....so i half what vx reckon :y
-
IIRC the gauge was reading 3 bars when full too :-/
Have a play with the settings in the ECU, James. I suspect my guess at the sensor resistance was wrong ::)
.. and 68 litres :o
That tank's full to the brim or the pump's lying to you! Supposed to be 54 litres to 80% isn't it?
Just don't leave it out in the sun when it's full....
Glad to hear it's complete though. Best get the man to give it a once over ASAP.
Well done :y
Kevin

I'd also give it a once over with the lap top to check the fuelling's still OK once the new plugs are in. We did have a rear multiram issue when it was first done.

Is that all? How big's the tank Dave?
Remember its a donut tank. underneath the boot floor.....it can only take 38L of LPG
-
So...the $64,000 question...
How much has it cost in total? A nice break-down of costs would be brill :y
-
We did have a rear multiram issue when it was first done.
Kevin
The cause of which was what in the end ?
-
The cause of which was what in the end ?
Ahh, well, this particular issue was due to the pipe having "come adrift", while we were wrestling with the LPG wiring, no doubt ::). Judging by the whooshing noises coming from it when underway I don't think there is another issue.

James already had the tank from a breaker. The kit from Jeremy contained everything we needed for the front end and fuel plumbing to the rear down to the last hose clip. We had to buy a union to connect it to James' tank, which is fair enough. He didn't supply the tank. That and a new LPG filler was about 50 quid from the local LPG guy.
The one thing I would do differently next time is to ditch the piggy back wiring for the petrol injectors and make up a plug and socket on the LPG loom to mate with the multi-way plug and socket behind the 2,4,6 bank, because it was a bit of a struggle fitting all the piggy back connectors under the plenum and there was miles of spare cable on the LPG kit loom.
I'll let James provide the grand total as I didn't pay it but suffice to say that the front end will only need pennies spending on it once you have the kit. Back end depends on choice of tank. Probably another 200-300 quid if you buy new.
Kevin

Cool...I bought a tank (and an older kit) a few weeks ago for £70. I might start installing that one until I get the newer setup.

Time to rob scrapyards of these connectors, lets check with all the breaking cars on here.

Good thinking, actually, or I wonder how much VX will sell the plug and socket for?
If we can get them with a few inches of loom either side I guess they could be grafted onto the LPG loom easily enough.

Went for another run last night. She's going well on gas, but still a slight misfire under heavy load, definately feels ignition related.
Just been outside in the piddling rain (I love it really) to change my spark plugs.
Observations are -
The plugs on the 1-3-5 bank (one of which we looked at, Kev) were all fine, and were probably changed as per the history.
But the plugs on the 2-4-6 bank :o
Let's just say, while "servicable" under a petrol environment, I'm not sure they'd be much cop with LPG firing in the chamber.
So let's see if this makes a difference, I'll take it for a test blast shortly :)
-
But the plugs on the 2-4-6 bank
That'll be the bank where they're slightly less easy to get to... ::)
There was certainly one bank playing up because one of the Lambdas was consistently going lean during the misfire. I thought it was 1,3,5 but could easily have been 2,4,6. We've probably confused the 2 Lambda signals.

Maybe, the 67 litres that's written on the tank, is actually the capacity it will hold, rather than the tank capacity?
Failing that, something faulty that means it's not shutting off?

The plugs ARE the problem - get them changed twin electrode are supposed to be better

Read up - I've just changed 'em. A quick cuppa, and I'll go out for a road test :y

Just a thought, James. Is the manual fill level gauge on the tank working?
Electric gauge is not working (could be configuration) just wondering if the float lever is also supposed to close off the filler port at a certain level and it's not working... :o
I'm sure I read on that tank "volume 68 litres fill capacity 54 litres".
Anyway, minor detail. Not a disaster even if it means the tank valve is fubar.
Kevin
-
I'll go double check.
Worst case scenario, is I'll have to just put 50 litres in at each fill.
The gauge on the tank is working fine :-/
I'll pop out again and see what it reads on the tank!
-
On the tank it says:
LPG 54l Max Cap 80
:-/
-
The tank gauge I think is pressure, the other is level.
Since you could fully fill it I would guess that the level float is sticking.
-
80l and you put in 68l
You are fine then
I get 62-63 into a 70l at most
-
Oh, that's not so bad then. If it's 80l volume it's filled to 85%

I would collect at least 5 sets and advertise them on the forum. This would make your conversion easier as well as the one after yours
