It is used to keep the auto gear box in a low gear, 1st, 2nd or 3rd, when slowly climbing a hill (say behind a lorry) or decending a very steep hill when you need to keep in a low gear. As you would in a manual. ;)
Is this what you meant? :-?

Lockup bypasses the torque converter, which is the device that takes up the drive as engine RPM increases and provides a variable gear ratio at low speeds.
At cruising speeds the torque converter is inefficient so a clutch is engaged to bypass it.

Thanks for your replies once again
I thought “automatic lock up” basically locked 3rd &4th …cruising speeds as previously mentioned
Where am at right now is I bought some Dextron 3 the other week I then couldn’t get the nut undone ive had it on the 4 poster today and still couldn’t undo it (didn’t want to risk it with a chisel)so it looks like its sump off this weekend & get some heat on it
I also plan to change it to manual soon but not soon enough has on average it does 20 to the gallon this morning going to work it changed in to 4 at 100mph and it was shifting from 4th back to 3rd …….so heres were me diesels going me thinks at idle it uses 0.3 gph which I would think is about right
I’ve always had manuals in the past 1st / 2nd/ 3rd is fine it will go in to 4th driving extremely gentle (no gradients) at around 40 mph touch the accelerator & it goes straight to 3rd (hardly kick down ) …I know im answering my own question here but I need to change the gearbox ATF 1st and go from there before anyone can answer my question

Lock up on a 2.5TD auto should occur around 50 to 60 mph in top gear if your light footed, maybe check your engines pushing the right power as it sould. If it kick's down too soon under load I would suspect engine power.
