Title: 3.2 timing belt tensioner setting

I am going to attempt to change the timing belt on my 3.2 this weekend.  I reckon I can cope with the non-adjustable lower idler and unmarked new belt but I am concerned about setting the tensioner.  This should be 3-4mm according to most posts but one reckoned it should be set for 10mm.   Does anybody have any experience/advice as to which is correct?

should buy the OOF cambelt DVD,if you havent already,its brilliant.
Assume you have a locking/setting kit?if not dont even attempt it. :y

Yes, I've got the DVD and the locking kit.  I just need some guidance on the tensioner setting.

3,4, or 10 mill...? Dont remember anything like that.

Probably shouldnt post a vague reply on such in important topic. But iirc you set the tensioner so the pointer sits between the marks with a large cranked ring spanner(32mill is it) and a 5mill allen key, and something about ering on the tight side to allow it to slacken off as it wares but still have the pointer within the marks.

Or something like? It was almost year ago now.
The non adjustable bottom pulley makes life alot easier as you only have to time bank 1 and 2. 3 and 4 are set, nout to do but torque it up correctly.

But as said im sure the dvd will tell all. :-) club shop mate. :-)

The procedure for the new setup (fixed lower idler) states that the tensioner should be set 10mm beyond the alignment of the marks before the crank is rotated to settle the belt. The tension should then be checked and if necessary adjusted to 3-4mm beyond the alignment of the marks for a new belt.

I believe this is where the confusion comes from. The 10mm recommendation is purely to allow for any additional slack in the belt before the engine has been turned over to settle it.

The bottom line is that it should still be left with 3-4mm at the TDC position with a new belt so no change from the advice in the DVD.
