Title: Oil cooler gone?
Post by: neilr on 15 June 2009, 14:40:17
I suspect the oil cooler has gone on my 2.5 v6. superb timing ive just put 4 new tyres on and its due for mot. I have oil sludge in expansion bottle. drained and flushed system yesterday. No mayo in sump some on filler as usual. However this is the weird bit i can it running for 3o mins plus without it overheating. take it on a run around town 10 miles it reads just above 90 on temp gauge. take it 1 junction down A1
when i come off temp rises. to 100 blip the throttle and it instantly starts dropping down again. Should I flush with a solution of some kind? Does the oil cooler sit in water? Do I need to drain oil and remove oil filter as per the haynes manual. Sorry for all the questions.

yes oil cooler stays in coolant in the v valley..

you need some detergent kind cleaning solution for oil..

and you need a good flush to whole system including radiator..

imho will be good idea to change oil too..

As said, replace oil cooler and flush very thoroughly. Might be worth taking out the rad. fan switch and cleaning that as this may be the cause of the overheating. A layer of sludge on the face of it will insulate it from the true coolant temperature.

I'll never forget the time Markie and I picked up a V6 with blown oil cooler from Herne Bay in Kent.

Arrived, and it was FULL of sludge.

Flushed it out at the sellers house -and again at pretty much every services on the way home.

Those were the days  ;D
