Look down both sides of the engine for oil (cam covers), down the back end of the heads for coolant (heater bypass valve) and check the colour of the coolant, should be clean and pink :y

Absolutely loads of things!
look for engine oil leaks, transmission leaks, blowing exhausts, worn front tyres, also ask for evidence of last cam belt/tensioner change, and offer him a lot less than he's asking!

make sure the EML light come son when the ignition is turned on (bulb check) and goes out when the engine starts .

Have a read of the "paperclip test" ... might be worth doing anyway . just so see what it says .. :)

Rear doors have a tendancy to rust out from the fold over of the door skin by the child lock and early ones also went under the outer window gasket at the top of the doors.

Also, check the suspension is poss (inc the rubbers) or just factor in the fact that after 4yrs / 60k they will probably be shot.
