Earlier on i noticed my engine all of a sudden went a bit noisey,i opened the bonnet and it sounded like it was coming from the aux belt. The best way to describe it is like the belt is rubbing on something, and also increases and decreases with engine revs.Any ideas folks,as i am scared now to give it some beans. :-?
-
Is the belt visably ok? No bits of rubber all around the area? Look closely.
I presume you have checked the belt and it's not catching anything including the cam cover.
If not it might be an idea to check your cambelt to make sure it's not that rubbing.
Good luck

Cant really see anything catching mate, and cant really get close enough yet to get my head inside the engine bay,as the engine is that hot, because i have been out in the car all day.Funny you should mention it being the cambelt,as that had already crossed my mind.I will probably be able to have a better look in the morning when engine is cooler. :y
-
Could it possibly be heat related,as i have been out all day in the car,but havent noticed anything before.
-
Could well be the bearing in the tensioner starting to give up. I've had to change these on both miggy's ... only a 15 minute job and a new pulley can be got without having to buy the whole tensioner....
Part no. 9157962 back in March 08 it was £23.05 +vat :)
I think it is the same for all miggy's .. but that was the one for the 3.2 ....

I had a noise in the engine bay similar to yours, and it turned out to be a split rubber pipe, the pipe is about two inches long and it ran along the side of the engine and joined two stainless pipes together, i think it is a part of the system that has something that helps heat up the cats , but anyhow ,that was were the noise came from , it may not be the same but it is another thing to look at--JK

Probabl the aux belt tensioner. Can remove it and repack with grease as a shortish term stopgap or can replace. Sure theres a guide on here somewhere..... ;)
-
run it with the aux belt off briefly.(its no different to the belt snapping as they do sometimes) If the noise has gone most likely tensioner pulley, or one of the auxillarys, hopefully not the ac pump. Dont leave the belt off too long though as your alternator will not be charging the battery etc.
Thanks for numbers Entwood. Mines a bit screechy squawky. :-)

Had another look today, and it sounds like a ticking kind of a squeaking sound,it is a constant noise but happens randomly,if you know what i mean, and is coming from the top part of the cambelt casing on the drivers side.HELP!!!!!!!!!. ;D
-
as suggested above, take the aux belt off and start up. If the noise stops then its related to the aux belt - probably the tensioner. if not then suspecvt cambelt
when was the cambelt and tensioners last changed?
also update you're profile maybe someone close can take a look
-
Only know to the cambelt being done once, well theres only one piece of evidence in the service history to suggest this. The car is on 113,000 miles now,so really it should be coming up to the third change. :y
-
bloody hell, dont turn that key mate. Not until its sorted, changed belt kit, whatever.
-
Thats what i was beginning to think mate. :-/
-
where are you? if you are the midlands i don't mind having a look for you
-
Yes bud,i am in the west mids, tipton to be exact.Sat down last night with all the service history and did find out that the cambelt was done at 83,000 miles, and the car is now on 113,000,so really got another 10,000 miles grace, maybe one of the bearings as mentioned by someone else earlier in the thread. Also first thing this morning when i started it up,it sounded a bit rough, then after a couple of minutes,it goes back to a bit of an irregular ticking noise. :y

which tensioner are talking about mate,is it the aux belt tensioner, and is there an how to on here anywhere. :y

I don't know if there is a guide or not but it is covered well on the cambelt change DVD available from OOF.
When you try running the engine for a short time without the aux belt on that should help locate the noise. Do make a drawing of which way the belt goes for ease of replacement. The AUX BELT tensioner is the top left pulley looking from the front. You slacken the belt tension by putting a 15mm (from memory) spanner on it.
The tensioner assembly is like a bracket with the wheel on it and the bracket is located by two bolts going into the engine from the front left wheel side of the block. A bit fiddly without a good assortment of extension bars but otherwise easy enough.
When it is off spin the wheel and check for play. It might just be the bearings are dry. You can repack them with grease on both sides by first carefully prising off the washer like cover . When packed just press the cover back on.

What Varche says is all true .. to replace the whole tensioner assembly...... but just the pulley can be changed on its own .. takes less than 15 minutes.
Spanner on pulley centre bolt, clockwise direction (I think) to slacken tension.... remove belt. Then just undo that centre bolt normally to remove the pulley. Replace with either a new pully or regreased original. Once done up then replace belt and hold tension on the pulley .. do NOT allow the pulley to slam onto the belt, release it slowly.
This is well covered in the Haynes "book of lies" ... I've now done it on both miggy's ... :)

Thanks for the info boys.Thought of something else today,i jet washed the engine about 3 weeks ago,so weather that has blasted any grease out of it i dont know, but something to keep in mind. Also jet washed my bike off awell, and now the back wheel bearing is playing up,so its probably down to my own stupidity. ;D :y

Sorted today, turned out it was the bearing in the aux tensioner,so a big thanks to all for the info. :y
