As long as it is running fine once it fires up and Code 64 isn't showing, then it sounds like it's gummed up with the diesel cacky poo.
I had exactly the same after changing my injector pump, due to front of the car being up on axle stands for about 6 hours last Wednesday.
The afore mentioned cacky poo at the bottom of the swirl pot in which the submerged pump sits had blocked the pump.
It now fires up on the button. (but I still have my timing to do ::))
Lift up carpet in boot. To the right of centre you will find a metal cover with 4 screws securing it. Undo the screws and underneath you will find a plastic ring securing a plate into which run two fuel pipes and a electrical block connector. Remove the pipes(jubilee clips will do to re-secure the pipes when all done) and electrical connector (Check there is power to the electrical connector. If not, check fuse 18 under steering wheel, It's marked "FI" on the Fuse box legend. Mine was 2nd row up, 3rd fuse from the right).
If power ok, twist off plastic ring. It may be stiff and need to be gently tapped round anti clockwise. I used a rubber mallet and a ratchet extension bar as a drift.

Known issue with the BMW lump. There are mods that can be purchased, though chipping it also tends to resolve (as the new map overcomes the issue)

I have the e-bay link for one of the plug in mods. I'll post it later when I get home.
I found that when I loosened the inlet pipe to the fuel filter to see if fuel was being pumped through whilst cranking the engine, there was nothing coming through, which led me to check the submerged pump.
I was having to crank the engine for at least 10 seconds until it would fire up and when it was running it would occasionally stall in traffic. My issue was sorted after cleaning the primary pump.
If it's fine once it starts then what TB says about the hot starting issue being common may be the case with yours.

Thanks for that, young Turk!
So chipping appears to cure this annoying problem, too? Ive heard of two, a 'chip' in the traditional sense, and a kind of 'plug in' affair.
So what's the pros/cons of these, then?

One of the plug in jobbies is called "Tunit" diesel tuning. I had one fitted to my Elite a few years back. I think the Tunit is around £300 nowadays. Pretty much the same as chipping.
Well, for the 2 days my AR25 box lasted (oh well, ya live 'n' learn ::))
I would go the chip route as TB knows "the man that can" for a bargain price.

i would say the first thing you want to check is the flexi pipes on top of the injectors. :y
had the same thing on my old tractor.
it turned out some of the pipes was porus and due to the loss of presure when the engines off, the fuel was draining back towards the tank :y

My tractor was hard to start when cold / after standing. With advice on this excellent site I changed a damaged injector leak off pipe.
Fixed :y

As said, if the diesel leak off pipes are leaking, that will make it a bugger to start, but that tends to be all the time, not just when hot.

Yep - 'cos they're at the highest point on the fuel system!
