just on the way to pick her up from her mates and come across a police car with bonnet up in the air and 2 rather bored looking coppers standing around by the side of the road, being the good motorist that i am i stopped in middle of the road and held up some traffic to see if they wanted a hand,
turns out that while driving to a job the aux belt snapped and as they had there lights and all sorts going the engine cut out on them, obviously i dont carry skoda spares with me but did offer them a tow if they wanted it.
they declined the offer as they had just that second got off the phone to the recovery peeps,
so off i went with a smile on my face, and hoping that in future they may do the same for somebody else that has broken down, not like the 3 cop cars that drove by a friend of mine a few weeks back.
any coppers that would stop on here, or indeed anybody else that would stop for coppers, what are your thoughts.
cheers

For breakdowns, I normally stop for women, just to check they are OK, and help on its way (normally talking through an inch of open window). Guys and company vehicles - I assume they have the knowhow and resources to deal with their situation. Bikers I always stop for.
-
Not for caravanners, then? :o

Only if he has a spare gallon of petrol and a match ;D

Hi all
I have had a young lady stop and offer me help when I broke down about 4 years ago, god I must look old and of no danger to anyone.
On the side of stopping for bikes, well I will not and I am a biker I ride a 1983 Yamaha XT400 trail bike and 99.9% of sports bike riders allways look down there nose at me because they think I am a 17 year old on a 125.
So I have very little time for fellow bikers, even when I go to Wickham square on boxing day people look at my bike as a classic but won't give me the time of day when on the road.
For those local enough the Wickham Square (Hampshire) meet is completly unofficial and costs nothing, it is just a lot of old bikes and cars that meet up. Unfortunatly it seems to be a lot of modern bikes turning up over the last few years and this has spoilt it somewhat, but at least there are no stupid riders there.
Sorry somebody give me a slap as I have completly gone off the thread.

Wickham square? That's Winchester way, isn't it? Not far from me. Hmm.

No, you've made valid points. Ironically, its usually the young lads with 2 stroke 125s I'm stopping for (they don't understand keeping plug(s) clean etc). There isn't the same comradery that existed between bikers 20yrs ago now.
When I threw the ZX10 up the road, the only people who stopped were a biker - 600 gixer - and 2 really old chaps in a car who helped lift it back up and get it out of the road. All the BMW drivers were steering around it >:(

thats interesting, why is this the case? most cases i will also stop for accidents i dont know why people think its a good idea to wander around the roads without some form of high viz on, i often stop just to make sure everyone is ok, adminster first aid where needed and then i be off again. most cases i will wait till an ambulance or police car arrives, as the ones i stop at useually warrant there arrival.
its amazing the respect you get when wearing an ambulance jacket :P

He He. Reminds me. My father in law rides a Pan European. He stopped on the way over to us to help a lad with one of these 125cc hairdryers done up to look like a racing bike. Out of petrol. He goes and gets him a can of petrol from the garage, gets him on his way. Just as they part, an amusing conversation ensues.
125 owner: "I'll be off, then. Don't try to keep up."
Father in Law: "Erm, what, Lad?"
125 owner: "Well, that's a touring bike, innit. This is a racer"
Father in Law: "This is an 1100. That's a 125"
125 owner: "Yeah, but, this is well quick"
Father in Law: "OK. I'll give you a head start (snigger)"
400 yards down the road he passes the 125'er who had his chin on the petrol tank!
Someone got a lesson that bling doesn't make it go!

I'm a government worker ..Believe me even I stay away from them..Unless it become too necessary..
In big cities some of police have bad relations..And when you give your hand they want to take your arms.. ;D
Happened me a few times..A very well learned lesson.. :(

Hi
Yes that's it, just south of Bishops Waltham or just north of M27 junction 10. but get there very early if you want to park/show your bike/car. 10am and the square is full. I usually arrive around 08.30 and it is difficult then.
Don't no if I will make it this year, brothers bike is off the road, dad's bike is up for sale after his accident and I doubt he will ride again. I would feel a bit silly on my own.

I often resisted the urge to stop and offer help (or offer use of my mobile phone, when these were still rare) when seeing a lady motorist broken down. I believe that a car with a lone male driver stopping next to them will get them concerned even before I roll down the window. Maybe I am wrong...
I did assist injured people on a couple of ocassions before the emergency services arrived on the scene, though it was more about comforting them really as their injuries were not life-threatening.
Helping broken down Police cars? I dont think this is really an option, I am sure they have all these rules and regulations that prevent un-authorised personnel from fiddling with them, and they are probably not permitted to allow a civi car to tow them anyway... Brucie?

Many moons ago, when I was a teenager, I and a friend where riding
our first motorbikes, still on 'L' plates, around country lanes.
We both came round a corner, hit a patch of oil whilst leaning, and
skidded off the road. So there we were, bikes with bits broken off them
with wheels spinning gently, dribbles of blood on both of us, laying
dazed in the road.
A car came round the bend, saw us, and pulled up. Thought he was stopping
to see if we needed help. He got out, walked over, and looked down at us
lying in the road with a big grin on his face.
"Well, this is a stroke of luck," he said, "didn't think I'd find anyone out here.
I've got lost. Can you give me directions to such and such?"
He's lucky we could only hobble. I've never seen anyone run off so fast to
their car!! >:(

yes this is probably the case, however i knew one of these coppers and so had a bit of a snigger at there expense. did noice another police car coming round the bed toward them as i left, and then on the way back they had already gone, so i guess they had another patrol come along and tow them away???
who knows.
suppose i better get on and fix this playstation and decoe this car radio :P

I'm a biker and I will stop whenever I see a stranded bike. I have been helped on a few occations by kind hearted people, but not every time. I had to push my GP100 (I was only 17) for 6 miles...through some of the nastiest parts of Brum. For those that know the area, imagine a young chap, pushing a little bike down the length of Soho Road in Handsworth at 2am. Scarey.
I digress. Help people if you can, because you might need their help in the future (that sounds like one of the crappy morels that He-man used to say at the end of each cartoon). Don't be a miserable b'stard.

I used to do recovery for the RAC on the transporter wagon and i can remember on one occassion my mate was on duty using the spec lift (A wagon that can do a rear or front end lift) anyway, he was driving back from a rescue and he saw that a car had broken down on the M4 by Magor, he pulled in and 3 lads got out the car and said thank god, we have ran out of petrol.
We used to carry 2 gallons of petrol and diesal for this type of call out, my mate (Nick) told them if they paid for the gallon of petrol he would let them have that, one guy said ok, well, as Nick was walking to his wagon one of the lads came up behind him and punched him to the ground then the other 2 lads got stuck in also. Nick ended up in hospital and most of his own tools etc were stolen from his wagon.
3 weeks later these lads were caught because that part of the motorway where they stopped was on camera, they each got 18 months inside.
From that day I have never stopped for anyone other than a lone female, I would love to stop to help others but in this day and age NO WAY.

The older bikes were quicker than modern small bikes. 55mph out of the 50cc was easy ;)

My GP100 had a Micron exhaust (which DID make a big difference) but I never got more than 75mph. Anyway, how many "older" bikes can beat my 165mph TL1000R??? Not many I should think.
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!

Ported, extra tooth on front sprocket, Micron, 9 grade plug (after the blow up) 102.5 main jet. Ate CB125Ts for breakfast. Fastest seen on clock 90mph, fastest genuine on flat 80mph (85 indicated - worked out from gearing, revs, and knowleage of speedo discrepancies - I had 3 points!!!!)

The AE50s and Fizzies were quick for mopeds
And 80 out of a 100 ;D ;D, mine would do 70 when standard! 12bhp was alot in 1978 for 100cc

When I was 16, I had a Honda PXR50. I remember (I still have nightmares) being out-dragged by a pink Honda Melody :-[
That was a bad day for mankind.

Drifting gently back to topic. When working, I always stop, especially where there is a perplexed owner standing beside an open bonnet. Saves a potential call 10 minutes later asking us to attend anyway. Apart from anything else, its good PR.
Likewise, tend to stop at any time (working or not) if its a lone female, particularly if there are kids present. Normally remain seated in the car and drop the window, rather than get out and potentially 'spook' folks. Again, I imagine if it was my wife/daughter stuck in the middle of nowhere....
As to breaking down in a company car - been there done that! Its embarrasing but, as someone has said, we are not allowed to touch anything (other than the most basic of basic checks) and await recovery. Nowadays, with the amount of electrical and electronic kit in the car we are not even supposed to jump start them. ::) ;)
The guys with the broken car in question may just be at the end of their tether after a particularly nasty shift, now looking forward to getting finished much later than intended, extra paperwork to fill out and possibly a bollocking from a gaffer for breaking it as well....
Not making an excuse, simply letting folks know that cops can have bad days too.... :y
