Heard a lot of people over the years (me included) with the crankshaft sensor issue, raised by the paperclip test.

If the cransshaft sensor needing to be replaced is the cause, what are the symptoms? I ran a V6 for a long while with said fault, with no apparent ill effects. Should I have been worried? :-?

Yes.
the car can work fine one moment and the next does not want to play anymore.
some of the symptoms are:
Bad starting \ Not starting.
misfiring \ spluttering.
not being able to go over 3500 - 4000rpm.
there are more no doubt the guys will let you Know.

Hello All,

My 1996 2.5v6 estate went through its mot today and all was well. I asked my friend who tested the car if he would just check if there were any fault codes. He came up with just one, re-set it then it came up again. Engine speed (rpm) it was 31 on his machine. Is this the same sensor mentioned on this thread and is this the one located right by the oil filter?
I am about to change the oil and filter and noticed today that it has been leaking a bit and the sensor is oily. I have no symptoms of a problem except there is sometimes a drop in rpm at idle and within seconds its back to normal. I am about, (in 2 weeks), to do the usual 2,000mile round trip to the south of France and am now concerned that this could be a problem. The rpm thing has been around quite a while and I foolishly just ignore it!
any thoughts?

31 just means the engine isn't running, nothing to worry about :y
