Hi folks,
Despite all the other problems I am trying to deal with my Omega at the moment, smoke started coming out of the centre cosole tday whilst sat i McDonalds, so bad I called the Fire Service because I thought it was about to go up! :'(
The auto box fuse has blown a few times, but this time just melted into a gooey red glob (10 amp). The airbag light has also come on as well, so I am assuming the 'fire' has taken that out with it.
Has anyone had this happen to them, and what advise, besides as the fireman said 'keep wafting it and we will fill it with water if you like'....He was jiking I hasten to add....
Thanks
Phill

It didnt amuse me at the time I can tell you..... >:(

How do you know it was the gearbox that was smoking?
-
My guess would be a selector "short" .. its electrical (fuse blown) and there's little else going to the autobox !!! I don't know what other wires run in the vicinity but that is probably the cause of the airbag like ... secondary action

The smoke was coming from the area of the transmission housing, but could be something else. I'm guessing it was because of the melted fuse.
Thanks again chaps :)

Thanks for that, that sounds as good a reason as any i've got.
What is the solution to that then........(Braces himself for expensive answer)
Oh nearly forgot, when then box was working the Snow Start button was iluminated and stayed on although the box was not operating in snow mode.....if that helps ny?
Thanks

is it the snow mode switch on pas side of g box? gets clagged up? any leaks in that area to cause short and smoke maybe? anyone?

I would say first task is to unplug all the connectors from the gearbox and inspect the length of loom that runs around the 'box for damage. Maybe that'll give you a clue what happened. I suspect you'll find a burnt wire or two and by matching colours / pin numbers with the wiring diagrams we may get an idea what's happening. Might also be worth looking out for a 2nd hand section of that loom as you'll priobably have to graft a new section in if it's damaged.

Has the radio been removed recently?
Do the wires look ok around the selector leaver (remove the leather cover)

Sorry for the delay in replying got totally side tracked with a death in the family.
The radio has been in & ot recently, but all connections are ok.
No water ingresss around the gearbox/selector area so I think thats ok.
Engine has been spluttering and I suspect HBV dripping onto the Dis Pack, but would this cause a short in the gearbox I wonder?
What do you think?

As a suggestion why not lift the gear selector gaitor and unplug the winter mode switch to see if that sorts the problem...if it went wrong just before the problem started then it may be worth a go :y
