Title: Oooo - smokey.....
Post by: V6 Gix on 16 July 2009, 21:59:34
Was driving back from Norwich today and there's a series of long dual carriageways and roundabouts spread along the way.

Must admit, was ragging the arse off it as I was in a hurry to get home (sorry officer), and when I stopped in a layby to get all the stuff out the footwell that was previously on the seat I noticed that there was quite a bit of blue oily smoke coming out from the wheelarch and under the passenger door.

It cleared quite quickly, but the water temp was quite a tad higher than normal and there were no obvious signs of a leak underneath.

I've ragged her pretty hard before and never had that problem before.

Any ideas?

may be just excess oil burning off if you have just had them done or worse case is gaskets not seated right and ared leaking again.

I know of a set that only lasted about six months, admittly a tad longer than yours, but a possibility they are leaking again, have you checked the oil filter is seated properly wonder if there's a leak there.  Someone on here managed to leave the original gasket on the block and then fitted another new gasket and filter and drove for a couple of hundred miles before dumping oil all over the deck due to original gasket distorting. just a thought

The work was done by James, so I know it was done right and with the correct VX parts.

There's no leaks underneath as I checked straight away and about 10 mins after as well, and it wasn't smoking when I got home. I'm trying to put it down to over exuberence with the right foot, but even so it shouldn't be smoking like that.

I must admit, there hasn't been a single month where I haven't had something go wrong with this car. I'm getting to the point where the love is wearing out!!

It sounds EXACTLY like what my 3.0 did last weekend... I was driving it hardish at the time with caravan on the back  ::)

Temp was just about at 100deg mark at the time, and it gave blue smoke for maybe 20 seconds or so and then stopped...

Question for you... go and wipe the boot/rear bumper with an old rag, and tell me if yours has a light film of engine oil on it. Mine did  :-[

I wonder if it's gearbox oil, coming from the bellhousing and burning off the cats  :o

Just to confirm - cam cover gaskets changed for gen GM parts, and breathers cleaned, bolts torqued to 8nm, so very unlikely to be the cause.

The fact it's coming from under the passenger door - that's where the cats are

Check your engine oil level before using it again mate too

Hi mate, engine oil level checked and it's fine. If it's gearbox oil, and something has split/leaking, then that's gonna be expensive isn't it. :-/

Checked the rear bumper as asked by Ian and no oil found there.

Had a run up to Tunbridge Wells this morning and no more smoke - so I'm stumped to what it could have been.

Hello mate,

The reason I say this, is because I had a funny coloured smoke coming from under my doors, when the auto box was throwing out oil, and with the wind it was getting dragged onto the cats and smoking in the way you describe...

It could be a number of things. Not necessarily fatal - could be as simple as one of the rubber ATF pipes that carry fluid to the cooler at the front...

Lack of grime on the bumper thankfully suggests the engine isn't burning any

Park the car on dry clean ground if possible, let it tick over for 10 mins, while keeping a close eye underneith....

Hi mate, when I first noticed the smoke when parked up in the layby, I let her tick over for a while and she wasnt dropping any oil at all. Checked underneath this morning before leaving for Tundbridge as well and there were a few spots, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Fingers crossed it's a cheap fix, or just one of 'those things' that happen once in a while.
