Title: Cold Start Problem
Post by: panderson on 02 July 2009, 08:53:45
Morning folks - I'm trying to resolve a problem when starting from cold by following some of your past experiences. I'm doing this by a process of elimination and the next step would appear to be the crankshaft sensor.
Could someone with greater experience than I point me in the direction of the locatiomn of this sensor on the engine block on my 2.2 CD auto?
Many thanks in advance :y

Same as the 2.0L.
Run your hand down the oil dipstick tube until you reach
where it enters the crankcase.
Feel forward, towards the front of the engine, approx
2" and you'll feel the single mounting bolt and then the
sensor.

Easiest way to change it is to remove the dipstick tube
and plug the hole to stop anything dropping down it, then change the sensor from the top.

Beats scrabbling around on your back amongst the ants
and removing aircon pump or power steering pump.

Reroute the cable as in its original routing it forms a
perfect route for oil drips and condensation to run
down the cable, enter the shielding on the last third
and cook and crack your sensor where it collects.

You may also need to remove the heatshield from
the exhaust manifold to give you better access.
I did, it's only a few bolts the same size as your
crank sensor mounting bolt, and it saves scratching
the top layer of skin of your wrist and forearm.  ;)

Hi Grumpy - thanks for the detailed response.

Exactly the idiot proof directions I was looking for.

Thanks again :)

Got it! Mounting bolt and just pull it out!

Bolt for crank shaft fiddly but pretty easy!

dippydave/JBazzaD - my cold start problem seemed to resolve itself (perhaps some of my other actiones resolved it) so I had no need to remove the crank sensor or dipdtick (well, for now!!) ;)

 :y Lucky You!  :y :y

Good to hear some of us have luck.  Mine ran out  :(
firstly, to change my sensor the fan belt, ac pump and power steering pump came off, then after refitting it all their was no difference. then we noticed the 3 pin socket had been 'modified' with a stanley to accept a different plug. so confusingly swapped the part for the newer one (removing and replacing all the gubbins again) and the engine ran fine...for a while. until it started misfiring and its quite likely the HG has gone  :(

wish i had a cold start!  ;D
