Title: What Trolley Jack
Post by: Boiler Man on 18 July 2009, 22:02:30
Hi Guys

Could someone give me a little advice please.

I'm looking at investing in a Trolley Jack.

My problem is what what weight to allow for?

In the owners book it says the Kerb weight of a 2.2 DTI Estate is 1694 kg which is under 2 Tonne
But the gross weight is 2265 kg which is about 2.25 Tonne or 2.5 Ton.

Most of the jacks I have looked at are either 2 or 3 tonne. There is usually a big differance in price to.

I'm sure the answer is simple, but I want to be sure.

Which do you guys use? :-/

I lift mine with a 2 ton trolly.
But it's always on axel stands about 15 seconds after lifting :)

I use a Halfords 2 ton jack as well, as you will never lift the whole of the car up on one jack!  In other words the most you will lift is half the car weight, 1 and a bit ton at MOST ;) ;)

You should automatically use axle stands to support any already lifted part of the car in anycase. ;) ;)

What is usefull though, if you can afford it, are high lift trolley jacks ;) ;)

I have this one http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj3000g-3-tonne-professional-garage-j

Had it for about five years. Lifted Mig's, Pajero's and many more. Still working well. As said don't forget axle stands :y :y

Cheers for your help guys and girls :y

Looks like that 3 ton jack is about £86

Bit more than I was thinking of paying, but at least I know the 2 ton will lift it.

I'll put me thinking cap on ::)

Of course I will use stands, bits of sleepers and wheels underneath to be sure :y

Don't want to be squished :o

It might be a little pricier that others but it will perform and it will last  :y

I have not used it yet as i haven't bought any axle stands and other bits yet, but i will say it is of a solid and heavy construction

Thanks :y

That looks almost identical to the Machine Mart one.

at half the price.

Wonder if they still have any left.

I'll call them Monday :y

Please note the code of the item as listed at the end of the second link (JM3024). Don't confuse with other higher rated jacks on his site which look more feeble and weigh less

another vote for the piccy above  :y

one 1st sight, I though way too big for me, so I bought a smaller one....

which soon pee'd me off, so bought the bigger one above.

So should have done it in the 1st place and saved some money  :y

even better if you wait for a vat free invite (register for a catalogue on their site if you dont get them)  :y

"What Trolley Jack".......now, that`s a really niche publication! ;D

I`d go for the 3 tonne (shown in pic. by Tonkapaj); it would seem to be wider and more stable; not to mention better built than any Halfraud offering......I like the handle-rotate release valve too. :y

Thanks for all your advice, much appreciated. :y

I must admit the Mach Mart 3 ton looks a good bit of kit.

But what do you think of the one Radar suggested? Looks to me like the same animal, but badged up different? :-/

Bloody hell, you don't expect this to happen to axle stands! I was under my car with just a jack and a wheel the other day, I knew I was risking it, but never again :-[

Okay, I'm convinced I need the 3 ton Jack

Now for Axle Stands, Which should I go for?

These?

or these.

I must admit I think the traditional type would give me more confidence. But what is your experience? :-/

And me, far easier to use than the pin ones which are more fidely, just place the ratchet stand under the car and lift the sadle, the ratchet wil catch and let go of the sadle, one hand job.
Pin ones are 2 hand job which means you have to get both arms under the car and hence head and shoulders also to get the pin in while the car is only supported by the jack. Also and the chain brakes and the pin gets lost.

Ratchet ones seem to be lower than pin ones i think. Or is it because i have a better jack now. The lower the stands first setting means less jacking needed, handy if you have a smaller jack.

Ratchet stands all day long for me.

If anyone saw my old 2ton jack at the Ashridge meet they would see why 2.5 ton jack is a minimum imho esp if you have a soft drive, smaller wheels dig in and the jack twists and bends. I now have a 3ton jack and is bullet proof it seems, only down side is its bloody heavy. To heavy for the boot of the car and my back. Wanted 2.5 clark job but couldnt get one locally in time so 3 ton it is.

A 2 ton jack is more than enough. After all, at what point can a trolley jack pick up the entire car? It's not going to happen. At worst you are picking up the front of the car, still no were near 2 tons.

And I recently got a set of the ratchet clarke axel stands. The only problem I might face with them is getting the car to the higher clicks on a 2-ton jack. Now I wish I'd bought the 3ton jack!

I know I can jack up, axel stand, block of wood of jack and keep going like that, but tools are supposed to make life easier!

yup, and thats where this jack really comes in, goes high, and has a big wide frame, and big wheels, so does far less damage to the road / drive then the small ones, which have left a lot of scratches on my drive.

I wouldnt go back to a smaller one.  :y

I have some of those Machine Mart/Clarke axle stands, but rarely use them - they don't fit the Omega Chassis rail too well, and tend to damage them.  I use my 20yr old halfrauds ones.

On that subject where do you guy's fit your Axle stands? According to the Ha**es manual. You jack the car up using the designated trolley jack points, then put your Axle Stands under the sill at the car jack points. :-/ :-/

Sorry for all the questions. Its been a will since I was under me Dad's Zepher 6 ;D and I was a bit slimmer back then :y

can't see how thats possible :-/

locking bar shouldnt ba able to do that?

will have a play with mine, but with weight on em, pretty sure they cannnot move, and if they did, it would be ratchet notch at a time, not gradual  :-/

Sinking into the drive surely? Unless the sheet metal body is deforming?
