2000 facelift 2.5 CDX manual estate. Recent 'all makes' major service at VX dealer. 72k miles. Not used much recently. Not had the cambelt done yet.
Suddenly running really rough - vibrating, using a lot of petrol (25mpg at steady 60 in 5th according to the computer). Wasn't sure I was going to get home.
I don't have the cash to stump up at a garage and ask them to fix it, and if there's something badly wrong it's possibly going to cost more to fix than the car's worth.
Where do I start ? (I maintain my old VW camper but this is a different kettle of fish).
Thanks for your help.

Missfire?
Try the paperclip test :y
-
Expect a code 19 ;D
-
Aha ! The paperclip test.
To add to my woes, this happened on the way back from the dentist after a filling. Do I wait until the anaesthetic wears off, or do it now ?
-
Do it now...just shove one end of paperclip in pin 4 and other end in pin 6...
-
I'm so disappointed - I'm getting 31 (no revs) with the engine off and just 21 with the engine running.
-
21 Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Voltage High
not sure what you do next though....
-
Sorry - that was meant to be 12 (start of diagnostics)
-
in that case, hmmmm
try pulling a plug lead or 2 and checking for oil in the plug wells.
-
Suspect HT at best, or at worse (if the inteval has been ignored) cam timing

I could only reach the front left, and that was clean.

Maybe it is time to get the cambelt done

..or maybe not. My trusty Snap-On timing light is getting a reading from the middle HT lead on the left (one day I'll know what the cylinder numbers are), but not the front one on that side.
I can't physically get to enough of any of the others to try them, and can't even trace them to wherever they come from.
Maybe time to get a manual ?

The DIS pack lives at the back of the nearside bank of cylinders ie 2, 4 & 6 It's pain in the harris to get out. You need the plastic scuttle panel off from under the screen.
No 1 cylinder is front driver's side :y

Thanks. I don't want to get it out - I'd like to be able to get the Snap-On clamp round each of the leads with the engine running. Does that sound possible ?

Maybe for the driver's side but I doubt you'd get to any on the passenger side.
-
So the only diagnostic would be to replace the leads and/or DIS unut ?
Thanks again !

It might cost you a hour or so (& a box of plasters ;D) but a look of your DIS might reveal all. The 3 coils of mine were all making a bid for freedom out of the plastic encaspsulating them. ;) ;) ;) assuming that the plug end looks OK re oil

OK - plasters at the ready. Did you follow a procedure from somewhere or just get on with it ?

I replaced mine before the advent of the OOF forum ;) The bolts heads are Torx but as I didn't have one small enough I used a 6 sided 8mm 1/4" drive socket. :y

Thanks for all your help.
-
OK - got the scuttle and wipers off (experience is something you have just after you need it !)
Trouble now is that I can't even find the DIS unit. I've read the procedure on here, which is great except it doesn't say where it is. From the parts picture, it looks like a big lump of lego - is it like that in the engine, or is it covered ?
Thanks.

The Dis pack is located half way down the rear of the engine and to the right hand side when standing at the front fof the car. Designed by an idiot.
There is a picture of an engine out of a car somewhere on the forum - probably in the maintenance section.. Try doing a search. Worth doing as you also need to know/remember where the leads go back on.
You need to get your hand down there and feel where the bolts are.
If you need a new one you will need the part number off your old one as there are several for the V6. Again have a look in the section on consumable parts for approx prices and part numbers.

Thanks for the reply. I have spent quite a while trying to find something on the forum here, but am still struggling, which was why I posted. I wonder if the 2.5 facelift had some peculuarities ?
-
I'm looking in this area. Am I anywhere near warm ?

Thanks for the reply. I've already seen both of those, and can now see the DIS pack in that picture, but am still trying to get to it on my car. I've also ordered a Haynes, which may help !
-
It's down there alright, just a long way!
Follow the bracket attached to the head with your fingers, plasters on remember, and you will find it attached level with the bottom of the head.
There are four bolts, feel for the ones at the back (level with the end leads) and the ones between the pack and head are level with them.
Don't expect to be able to see anything, all done by feel.
And use a torx socket, if you round a head with a socket then start crying!
Can you tell I just did mine, mostly stopped bleeding now!
-
Oh, and I have a Haynes, it did not help!
-
And more...
once you have the pack unbolted it won't come out of the gap between the fuel rail and the wiper motor.
If you remove the front two of the thee bolts holding the motor to the wiper framework then it will turn enough on the rear bolt to let the coil pack out. Plasters still required!
And you will need to unbolt and move the plenum still attached in your picture, don't have to remove it but it can make life easier.
-
Thanks for all that. Don't have any torx sockets yet, so that's an excuse to leave it for another day. And I'll cancel the Haynes !
-
Haynes can be useful, just not for this job, usual lack of helpful pictures.
I seem to have ranted a bit on this one, must still be in pain :)
-
Still struggling with this one ! Got the two rearmost torx undone and can see another at the front, but I don't seem able to get my 3/8" torx E10 socket in there. What did other people use ?
Thanks.
-
I've found 1/4" E10 sockets on fleabay - anybody know if these would fit ?
Thanks.
-
Got some deep 3/8" sockets from Machine Mart and they fit fine.
