My dip stick always reads way over the level, even though my car has been leaking oil from the sump for a week, the dip stick always reads the same, it was the same when i had a leaky rocket cover gasket . Any ideas why the level on the stick never changes?
-
Too much oil, you say it always read over the max?
Possibly the wrong dip-stick?
-
Mines the same ....it leaks enough to make a mess everywere but takes about 3 wks before anything noticable on the dip stick
-
yep always over the max, and its been leaking oil pretty badly for a week and no change on the stick at all.
-
a little bit of oil goes a very long way when it escapes. 6 plug wells full of oil will not show much differance on the dipper. I beleive its one litre from max to min level marks, but double check this as not sure for all models........
if its above max level it is over filled....Not good. Drop the oil and re fill to the correct level asap.
-
dumb question but....if i droppped the oil would i need to change the filter too? and how much oil does it take to get it to about the right level?

depends on your service schedule, oof recomends more frequent oil canges by the way. when was oil last thanged?

the last oil and filter change was done about 1500 miles ago so was done recently when i had it serviced

Its worth changing the filter too, i bought a box of them early last year from Vauxhall (20) worked out at £1 each
2.2 takes just under 5L in total, fill the oil filter before fitting. Its 1L from the bottom of the dip stick to the max mark.
How long since its been changed? Its possible its been overfilled
-
You should change the filter everytime you change the oil.
-
Any recomendations for what oil to use? on my other cars i always asked the garages to use the Castrol Magnatec oil, would that be the best to use in an Omega?
-
Vx 10W40 Semi synthetic
-
GM Semi Synth is best value for money, and does not create as much mayo as other brands.
-
cheers will give that a go :y

You should change the filter everytime you change the oil.
I change the oil every 3000, but only change the filter on every 2nd oil change.

With genuine filters costing just £1, i change it anyway!
-
the thing with the filter change i guess is i dont know what type/brand of oil the garage used when they did the change, so maybe its best to change mine when i change the oil :question
-
just a quick note on this dip stick thing, just checked the invoice from the service i had done 2 months ago and its says "4.5 litres of oil" so maybe they didnt overfill? it or maybe im being too trusting of what they've written? lol

Thanged???? ;D ;D

i think chrisgixer is right. a small amount of oil goes a long way. its one litre from min - max on the dipstick & if you split just a quarter of a litre oil used oil on your drive or road it would make a hell of a mess.
Your car may have only leaked 50-100ml which would hardly show on the stick.

Wouldn't even put that in the lawnmower ;D
