Title: fuel injector pump 2.5 td

hi during my visit to the east anglia meet the boy (my new mate!) did the tech 2 thing and found no fault codes but said my slow starting problem could/is the above item whitch costs a bloody lot to replace fit and set up, and that chiping it most likely will sort it out. Does anyone have ant info on this little lot as the car seems to run fine just a bit slow starting followed by some smoke the longer it takes to start the more smoke i thought glow plugs, unburnt fuel (smoke)

Is it slow when starting from cold, or is it a warm-starting problem?

i think when warm seems a little quicker from cold, i do always give it 2 heatings of glow plugs before fire up

Start by changing Glow-Plugs. I changed mine last year and from then on starting was on the button, hot or cold.
If seriously difficult to start when warm, have a look here.

Check the lift pump. It may be gummed up with diesel silt and cacky poo.

Chipping is well worth it. Better mpg and mucho improved accelleration.

What's your battery's condition like?
On the 2.5TD's it needs to be 110%!

I suffered this problem even after changing the injection pump, at 1200 quid!

I noticed that the cranking-speed was not quite as swift as I'd like, so in desperation I fitted a brand-new, (and model-specific), replacement battery a year ago. Voila - excellent starting, hot or cold! Before replacing it, I got the alternator output checked, which was spot-on.

I'm aware of other tractor-owners who've successfully followed this route since.
A decent 2.5TD battery will set you back around the 70 quid mark.

If its a pig to start from cold, glowplugs are favourite. Easy to measure from relay box :D

If its a pig to start when warm, thats often the FIP, and you can get mods to overcome, though chips normally do the same thing with advantage of making the car run better.

If its all the time, look at leak-off pipes or leakiy injectors

Is your new battery 'model-specific' for a 2.5TD?
What's the cranking speed like - does it really whizz the engine over?
