Title: Mercedes E300 TD doesn't like starting from cold!
Post by: IrmscherKris on 15 October 2007, 08:15:02
My father-in-law dropped his troubled 99 Merc TD off for the MOT jobs to be done (couple of lights etc - nothing bad). He has been having an on going problem that if its left for an hour + it won't start!
He gets up every morning, connects the jump leads to his missus car squirts X amount of easy start in the MAF  :o and eventually it runs. He can switch it off then leave it but can only leave it off for an hour max or it just turns and wont catch - doesnt even sound like its trying! Then after 10 mins on jump leads, it runs.

Once started, it runs perfectly. Smokes quite a bit on start up, but when it clears theres no smoke even under load/boost.

It all started off when the battery went flat - that was changed. He made the mistake of taking it to a "mate" who changed EVERYTHING! Rear diff? (dont know why) the pump (as advised by merc) glow pugs and injectors.

He has given up on spending money on it now and I've decided to try and help before he trades it in and gets £1.2k  :o (left hooker - but still  :o)

Any ideas appreciated as without stripping the engine down, I'm at a loss now.
No signs of diesel leaking, fuel filter changed, battery changed. Needs an oil change BIG TIME! last done 20k ago (est)

Thanks Omegatoy, 3 diesel places (including merc themselves) have looked at it and it seems they never spotted the air bubbles in the clear diesel pipes near the filter! So, turns out merc made these dodgy plastic connectors with rubber O rings - which I think have perished.

Off to merc later then, wish me luck! :)

I have changed these pipes.... Still doesnt wanna run for love nor money  :'( I feel like a **** now cos he's spent about a 1nr on my say so and it didnt work  >:(

There defo still air in the pipes and it will fire if you batter the starter motor, while on jump leads.

I need more ideas cos I'm all out now :(
