Title: Scuttle drain .............
Post by: I_want_an_Omega on 11 August 2009, 21:50:22
Hi all,

In working my way around my new toy I thought that I'd clean out the scuttle drain using the excellent guides here.

I was HORRIFIED to see that the thing was virtually full of mud - with a nice topping of leaves! The mud was dry &   compacted.

I started cleaning it out and eventually got to the drain plug. The problem is that I can't see how the drain plug drains as it seems a solid grommit is in the base. I can't see the front edge of the grommit & my arm is too fat to touch.

If I put some water in then it drains away very very slowly.

Before I try poking with the electical cable - I thought that I'd ask the obvious question - why not just remove the grommit totally or punch a big hole in it?

Any ideas/comments welcome.

Thanks .......... Rob

Hi Rob,
It depends on what model year your Mega is.

On the earlier cars the drain comes out inside the wheel arch behind the wheel(should see a rubber tube sticking out of the inner wing)so just stick something up the hole to clean it out :).

On later cars it comes out in the engine compartment although not sure where as i have the earlier model :-/.

You will find that the earlier models drainage route is a dog leg shape so not easy to poke anything straight down :(

          HTH,
                Pete :)

That shows exactly where it is Andy, in face there's a hinged flap on the grommet.  You can reach down and pop it up with a finger (just) to clear the bottom of it.

There's not a great deal of room between it and the chassis leg however. :y

Yes, this helps - thanks.

Its a '98 minifacelift BTW.

t seems that the drain in the grommit is on the front edge - so I'll try with cable tomorrow.

I'm gobsmacked that my car didn't suffer from an internal flood - who knows how long it had been like that!

Due to the damage it can do to heater components and interior it's certainly worth checking every now and then :y.

may also be worth changing your pollen filter if it was that bad, when I got my car and found this wonderful site  :D  I did a a lot of reading and changed the coolant (which was practically black) and the pollen filter (also black). I check the skuttles every week and am constantly suprised to see the drivers one keeps getting blocked with leaves even though I don't park under a tree

Sorted!

Found the hole in the grommit - although couldn't actually see it, and poked some T&E cable through followed by some water to flush it out.

Thanks all .........

another good, cheap tool to use is an old toothbrush, gives you a bit of extra leverage and the brush head is about the right size
