Post by: omegatech on 09 August 2009, 21:48:00
hi there all

please can somebody help me i did my rocker cover gaskets today on my v6 and after many hours of doing the job i put the engine back together the exact way i had taken it  apart.
and when i started it up it started up no problems but after about 5 seconds it started to idle rough not as smooth as before. i cleaned all the breathers and the idle air control valve. i have gone over everything i done but cannot seem to find why it is doing it.
please help

Have you trapped a wire, at the front of the right hand passenger bank??

I did exactly that and got the same results!  Very easy to do as the cable is black! ::) ::) ::)

Do a paperclip test if not ;) ;)

hi there

thanks for your replies

i know the wire you mean as it did play me up a bit  :'(  but i did manage to get it away enough to put the cover back on.
i will do the paper clip test as soon as it dries up abit.
i was also told to change the spark plugs and ht leads as the oil could have damaged them due to the oil covering them.

It could be the leads/dispack but could also be an air leak at the plenum O rings. Any hissing noises round the plenum area with it ticking over?

hi there

i started my engine to listen for any noises and there is a loudish type of rushing air sound could that be the o rings below the plenum come loose or out seated.

sorry

the sound of the rushing air seems to be coming from the plenum end.
cheers

Have you got any easy start or brake cleaner spray? If you have try a tiny squirt under the plenum near each cylinder. If the revs increase slightly on any of the pots then there is extra air getting in through the O ring :y

hi there again

BINGO :) just to let you know the problem has been found after checking all the plenum rings and found they were all ok i decided to put it all back together and do it another day.
but it was when i was putting the top breather box back on i noticed the seal was missing where it fits into the top of the plenum after finding the seal thank god i fitted it back on the breather box and the 2 o rings were also damaged so i made a couple temporarily til i go to vauxhall and hey presto no rough idling.

many thanks to everyone for your help
