thanks in advance

Is is a tapping noise?
Sounds like you need an oil and filter change. When was it last done?
-
yes it is dont know when it was last done only had the car for 4 weeks
-
Oil and filter change required ASAP, would also recommend cam belt kit too unless you are sure it has been done within the last 4 years or 40000 miles. :y
-
cam belt is that the 1 at the front of the engine coz ive seen a couple of cracks in that 1 can they be done at home or is there anything i need to know before starting it myself
-
That's right; unless you know and can be proved by receipts or service records, some things must be done ASAP, and the cam belt kit (belt AND tensioner and idlers) is one such highly important item. Also seriously consider doing the water pump too as it is really easy to do at the same time.
What history do you have for the car?
edit:
You can not see the cam belt without removing the cover. What you can see is the auxiliary belt, and for the sake of around £20 is worth doing if yours is cracked.
You can do all this at home but before jumping in to it, do some reading on the various guides on this forum and make sure you have all the tools; most important is the cam locking kit that must be used when changing the cam belt.

dont have any history for it think i was lost due to its age its in immaculate condition for its year only trouble iv,e had is with the tick over it kept cutting out but i just adjusted that and it seemed to work. you mentioned the tensioners and idlers but to be honest i dont know what they are and is it a separate belt for the water pump
-
Could be the hydraulic tappets too. you can use some engine flush to clean it through before you change the oil.
I use forte engine flush, found it to be one of the best.

If you update your profile with more details about your car (engine size, spec) we will be better able to help, as some things are different between 4 pot and V6.
When you say you had trouble with tickover and you adjusted it, what exactly did you adjust?
Tensioners and idlers make sure any slack is taken up on the belt so it doesn't slip. These are often the first things to cause cam belt failure even if the belt itself is in good condition. Over time the belt stretches slightly and the tensioner is required to keep the right tension throughout its use. The idlers are used to make sure the timing is correct on the cams. Sloppy mechanics will sometimes only change the belt but leave the original tensioner and idlers, which is asking for trouble.
V6 engines use the aux belt for the water pump, 4 pots drive the pump with the cam belt.

ive updated the profile bumbazor do you know what i,m looking at in cost terms for all the suggestions ive had i will look into everything tomorrow hopefully get it done over the weekend
-
just to say thanks to every1 who pitched in with suggestions will probably try them all
so thanks again guys joe

Not sure about costs as it depends on whether you buy at full price or trade card.
Someone should be able to give you current prices if you ask nicely.
However as you have the 2 litre engine your water pump is driven by the cam belt.
I don't know exact prices but for oil change and filter, cam belt kit, aux belt, water pump, coolant (as you will need it when changing water pump), probably max £200 at full retail prices but you will have to check current prices as that figure was very roughly calculated!
-
just noticed you asked what i adjusted bumbazor it was the accelarator cable
-
I thought you will have adjusted that. It's often the wrong thing to do for an idling problem.
The real cause should be investigated and fixed. In your case the cause won't be a mis-adjusted cable and so your fix of adjusting the cable won't have removed the cause(s), and the problem could return if not fixed.
I don't know what the 2.0l 16v engines are like compared to v6 but the idle control valve (ICV) is one such possible cause of idling problems.
However I've never had a problem with idling but a quick search around these forums should give you some causes to look out for. Also it would help if you explained exactly what idling problems you had/have.

once the engine heated up, when braking to stop the eml came on and the engine cut out, seems to be an awful lot about the omega i dont know yet but i am willing to learn coz its such a joy to drive
-
It would be a good idea for you to get some fault codes out of the ECU as it sounds like there might be other things wrong.
There's a guide on how to paperclip the car to get codes read. Have a look here: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1189022687 and post up the codes you get.

i willtry the paper clip test and post whatever comes up and thanks again bumbazor
