Hi all
I have a rattle at tickover which would be eliminated with a few more revs (50 - 100 should do it). Currently idles at around 550rpm which seems low to me but I suppose it may be normal for a diesel.
Is it possible to make a manual adjustment to the idle speed or is it all through the Engine Management System these days?

Not sure about TDs but couldn't you just adjust the throttle cable on the throttle body :-/.

You could turn the aircon on...will increase idle speed by about 100 rpm :y Not recommended to adjust the cable...not sure what idle rpm is on a diesel but its 500rpm on a v6

On a 98?? Hmmm could be on the diesel I guess...if so just stick aircon on permanently lol :y

It's fly by wire
No strings (cables) attached! :)

On some petrol cars idle can be adjusted with a tech 2. The same may be true of the diesel engine although I have never played with one. Neither have a mechanical adjustment for the idle speed as it's regulated by the ECU.
On non-DBW cars the idle speed cannot be adjusted by altering the throttle stop. It is controlled by the ECU using the idle air valve.

mine ticks over at about 800 but now and again revs up to 1500 dont no why .and they dont have a cable they all fly by wire so think its a computer job to ajust

have you checked to make sure the plastic engine cover isnt rattling?, ive been told most people remove them for that reason :y

I have some small pieces of corrugated cardboard between the plastic cover & the engine
Cures the rattle! ;)

Mines tight as a ducks bottom without any extra packing ;)

From memory, 700 rpm is right for TD.
Its DBW, so no cable. Even if it did, do not bodge it by adjusting it on the cable, thats just being senseless.
Tech2 can do it, no other way.
As others have said, remove the cover over injectors and see if that cures.
Also, check the aux tensioner, and also check the PAS pump isn't loose ::)

Thanks Jamie for the vote of confidence on my advice :-[ ;D. The only reason i suggested this solution is because I've just sorted out a high idle problem due to the cable being badly adjusted with the only affect being slightly high revs. which is what Andy requested :P ;D.

all modern cars have ecu controlled idle. dont try to bypass it from doing its job ;)

Somehow I didn't get notification of any replys to this (yes, I checked the box) and have posted another question later.
I will certainly try the engine cover idea. I presume it is easy enough to get off?
Not having worked on cars much (since helping my Dad fix his 1959 Hillman Minx as a kid) I may be a little rusty!
Also what is a Tech 2?

A Tech 2 is a computer you connect to the dignostics outlet which tells you of any problems and can also allow you to upgrade and adjust certain parts :).
