Title: Broke down after selling
Post by: 1960darrenh on 04 August 2009, 17:15:53
I sold my Omega today to my brother. The car has been perfect but it konked out 10 minutes after he took it away!!! It took 10 minutes to get it to start again and then it drove perfectly. He called me again today to say it had konked out again while doing 30mph. Again it took 10 minutes to restart. I have now taken the car back and have taken it for a 15 minute drive under different conditions...........it was fine. I shall drive it as much as possible for a couple of days to see if it does it again. I did notice that when I turned the ignition off and restarted, it started but cut out straight away. I restarted it again and it ran fine  :-/ Any ideas?

You need to do the paperclip test, I suspect you will get a code 19, crank sensor

Ok but I don't know how to do the test. Is there a "workthru" somewhere on this site?

Also I get no engine managment light come on the dashboard. Does this mean no codes will be stored?

My '99 Omega 2.5 CDX saloon conked out all by itself just sitting still  due to a crank sensor. It was running fine one minute, and was parked up. A few hours later it refused to start! >:( Totally dead. A new sensor fixed it and it's run perfect ever since.

I thought he meant he broke down after selling it - I could understand that!

It's done 80.500miles. Will do the paper clip test today and hope it comes up with something.

According to the service pack that came with my 130,000 mile car the crank sensor has been changed three times.

Did the paper clip test and got NO fault code. Just the usual 12 & 31. I'm really confused now as to what is up with it.

That is all that I got when my crank sensor failed. I fitted a new sensor and it started first turn of the key.

With the faulty sensor the engine management light stayed lit when I was cranking it trying to start it. With the new sensor the light went out as soon as the engine turned over.

The local independent guy with a tech 1 didn't believe me at the time but I did the paperclip test over and over before coughing up £100 for the new sensor. Maybe the newer cars have better fault logging? (mine is 1994)

It seems that faulty sensors will randomly come back to life & then fail again at the most inconvenient moment.

'Crank sensor' problem.
It is faulty, it only shows 'code 19' when totally failed.
I had the same 3 weeks ago, replaced sensor £51.00 from GM dealer.  :y

"The car has been perfect but it konked out 10 minutes after he took it away"...

It's because cars have souls. I've had

 - a C***a (sorry) start running on 3 when I took it to trade in.
  - Leccy window stopped working on a Micra when it was on its way to be traded.
 - Sold my E34 525, started it the night before and it ticked over sweet as anything. Guy came to pick it up, started it, and it idled like I'd thrown iron filings into the intake...

Conversely, doing the oil cooler on the ex-plod, was a complete swine, and took me half a day. Sneaked into the garage to the silver 2.6, and took it by surprise - got the bottom bolts off in a matter of moments... once I'd got my biggest extension handle to get the oil filter cap off... *grumbles about garages*

Changed the Sensor for a new one today and I STILL have the problem  >:(

Still no fault codes showing and I even did the paperclip test while it was koncked out and would not restart.....showed nothing!!!!!

Can anyone suggest the next thing to try?

Still cuts out after a few minutes of running and takes a good 5-10 minutes to start again.

Was it a genuine Vauxhall sensor?

Yes it was a genuine Vauxhall Sensor.

Ok well an update, the car stopped again today and would not restart at all. I called the AA. They confirmed that there was sparks at the ignition end and fuel coming through to the engine. After spending nearly 2 hours on it he reckons that the immobiliser is probably stuck ON. Fuel is being delivered but not as it is supposed to be which he says is the E.C.U. or Immobiliser.

I'm desperate for some advice on this and how to get round the immobiliser

If thats the case I would change the fuel filter first.

Turns out it was a camshaft sensor. Vauxhall have fixed now.
