Title: Why is my cat rattleing like a tin can?
Post by: Brick Tamland on 24 August 2009, 17:58:49
Is it knackered? :'(

If it is anything like mine then it may well be just the heat shield around rattling. not to much of a problem I think.
Some people strap it on with a couple of jubilee clips.

It could be starting to break up inside, i have had this on a couple of other inferior cars. Its not too much of a problem until it blocks the exhaust, restricting the flow of gasses and causing the car to run rough and restricting the power so it wont let get any speed up.

After trying for ages to find what was rattling on ours (2.0), I finally discovered a wonderfully-designed stone trap in the underbody heatshield just to the nearside of the point where the handbrake system splits into two separate cables.

The heatshield has a sort of saucer shape area that seems designed to store forever any little (or bigger) stones that manage to find their way in. (Then rattle like the proverbial skeleton w***ing in a biscuit tin)

If on the other hand, you've shaken the cat itself and that is definitely what is rattling, ignore all of what I've just described.  :)

Rattly heatshield, either fixed by a carefull hoseclamp or a spot of clever weld as required....

Been under it now. And the heat shield is definetly not the source of the rattle. If I hit the cat it makes the noise and sounds like all the inside is loose :'(

Could this do and damage if left for a while because I'm in collage and can't afford spending my hard sponged earned money.

A new cat buddy! Its a shame its a 2.0 as I have a nearly new 2.5 sitting here for not a lot of money. I'd even have helped you fit it.

I think for now I'd be better off getting it cut out and welding a straight through downpipe, until I get my collage grant in november.
