Right car went in Friday and has the crank oil seal done, plus new belt tensiors etc and water pump grand total of £247 :( thats ontop of the £833 i paid 3 weeks ago for the HG :o but its started to leak oil again in exactly the same spot!!!! >:( ( ontop the drip tray just under the large pulley at the bottom of the engine) What can it be if the crank seal replacement hasnt cured it! getting so fed up now of this car, think its getting to the point i cant spend anymore cash on it and it will just have to go :'(
Anyone got any other ideas of wat could be causing this oil leak? ( its not the cam gasket either ) :'(

Hi to me your problem sounds like the garage has done the work wrong take it back and tell them that there job was not good enough and get them to sort it out as its there bad work, you are covered for 6 months on labour, 12 months on parts, so get them to do it for free.
-
just a point tho have you checked the oil pressure switch that is next to the crankshaft pulley mine was leaking from there just a few drips i too thought it was crank seal 4 .50 on tc

There is a large spacer the crank seal sits on which will have a grove worn in it by the seal. Sometimes you can get away with turning the spacer around but its best to replace it. Do you know if the garage replaced it?
-
sounds as the garage didn't home the seal properly .i would take it back and tell them to do the job again.

Due to me being stuck doing alot of overtime ( once again >:( ::) ) unable to take it to the garage for at least 2 weeks now.
Would this sort of oil leak cause it to fail its MOT? because at the moment im tempted just to leave it leak until the MOT and if it passes im going to just sell the thing :-/

Hi
Has your mechanic checked and cleaned ALL the engine breathers?
I am not that technical with engines but a few years ago we had a problem with oil blowing out everywhere. We had a :Dskimmed head new head gasket, rocker gaskets you name it. It turned out to be blocked breathers. Get you mechanic to check and clean all of them. Apparently there are some on the back of the engine that are difficult to get to but a good mechanic should know how to do it. Ours did and no oil leak since.

Well the mechanic that did my HG "said" he cleaned them but when i removed the sump breather pipe at the back of the engine it was totally clogged up with a thick almost solid black substance, ive cleaned it out since ( havent got a new gasket for it yet though so it is leaking but thats right at the back of the engine where it bolts onto the top of the sump) but the other breathers i havent checked, but i cant see them being the reason for this leak as it seems to be coming right from the front of the engine and dripping down onto the drip tray :-/
Ive been searching through a few sites about MOT's and from what i been reading it seems an oil leak wouldnt affect the MOT unless it was a dangerous leak ( fuel or oil onto hot exhuast part) can anyone confirm this?

An oil leak shouldn't be an MOT failure.
However if you paid the garage to fix it and it's not fixed I'd take it back as soon as possible.

Hi if the breather pies are blocked thay will put high pressure onthe engine and it has to give way some were, head gasket etc, your rubber is prob down to the pipes, would look at them all, my need oil change, when do oil change put some oil leak sealer in good stuff stops all leaks and clean out the top of te engine if you get the right 1. :y

I think you'll find that all depends on where the oil is landing

If there's a chance the oil will land on the road, then it most definately is. Anything that is a danger to other road users is a failure. Also, any oil dripping in the engine bay can be sprayed around by the fans. I learnt this the hard way. I was in my Carlton approaching a set of lights half way along a 50mph stretch of dual carriageway when they started to change. I braked normally and all of a sudden I had the steering wheel turned full lock into a skid as I was almost at a right angle sliding towards the lights.
I must have looked a right pratt to all the other drivers who probably thought I had not seen the lights and panic braked.
I pulled over after the lights and on checking the engine bay I found that I had an oil leak that had been misted all around the engine bay...and onto the front brake discs.
This had caused a brake imballance between front and rear and had the same effect as yanking up the handbrake as the rears now became the prominent braking force.
