The engine managment light on my car light up first in march this year for the first time. The next morning the light went off and did not come up again until july this year. The car run smoothly with no problems at all.
The EML went off again and the car has been running smoothly until yesterday. The EML came on again, luckily this time i had a maxscan reader and i got error code P0340 (Camshaft position sensor A circuit bank 1 or single sensor). i Assumed the camshaft sensor needs replacing.
As i was driving to work this morning the EML was off, but the spanner sysmbol lit up!! .I decided to call the AA patrol man who ran a diagonistic on the car and returned error (P1781) which he said was manufacturer specific!! So i have to go to vauxhall Tech II.
I know the vauxhall dealers are not famous for right diagonistics of our car and most likely send me on a wil goose needing me to replace all sensors in the car.
I would appreciate any input from members here on what their take is on the problem with my miggy.
Also i have a spare camshaft sensor, i would like to replace my one in the car to see if the problem clear. Where is the camshaft sensor in the 2.2 and is it as easy as removing the old one and replacing it with the new one?

Camshaft sensor on the 2.2 is at the end of the black strip in the middle of the cam cover, the cable disappears under the belt cover on the front.
Dead easy to change.

P1781 is not a recognised code for the 2.2.....I would read the codes yourself

That is the code the AA man came up with.... my maxscan reader gave code P0340.Suspect camshaft.

Lol, hes an AA man for a reason!
That code range is generally within the gearbox area.....the closest are:
P1779 Engine Torque Signal Malfunction C-07
P1780 Engine Torque Reduction Request Malfunction C-07
P1791 Accelerator Pedal Position Signal Malfunction C-07
Now we do know that you cna get gearbox errors (due to CAN bus issues) when the cam sensor starts to go on the 2.2's

When i had cam sensor problems there was another code as well , something about " MIL Request from Transmission " .... its on here somewhere but i cant find it :y
Found it .... i had this code as well that went when new genuine cam sensor fitted :y

P1781 is not a recognised code for the 2.2.....I would read the codes yourself
Thanks to the AA man confusing me with an error code p1781...i had to go to vauxhall dealer for a tech II reading. Basically it is a camshaft problem just like maxscan had reported! Does someone have an engine picture with an exact location of where the camshaft is. I did try looking for it last night without much joy.

Cam sensor is under the plastic belt cover.
You can see the cable coming out of the sensor on the front top part of the engine. It is the only cable sticking upwards on the top of the engine.
Sensor is not visible until you remove the belt cover
Check Welung's post in parts for sale (Z2.2 mig ).
Cable is clearly visible on the pics

lift youre bonnet and the sensor is at the FRONT top part of engine,,underneath black plastic cover saying ecotec on....the wire to it is going in where the cut out on cover is. :y about 10 minutes to change it

if the problem in your camshaft you should have had problems with engine starting. Is it easy to start you engine or it takes while to start? :)

Yes i have had to start car a few times in the last weeks, has been getting progressively worse..

With camshaft sensors on the 2.2, make sure you replace it with a genuine Vx part!
Do NOT replace it with an aftermarket sensor.
