Hi guys, I got an advisory on my MOT a while ago for my rear brake pipes, he said they need cleaning up and greasing or painting. I am planning on having a look at this tomorrow, my plan was to rub them down with a wire brush and then coat them in copper grease. Is that the best way to do things? Also I am a bit worried about breaking them, how much do I need to clean them up before greasing?

Hi mate, a wire brush might be a bit too rough! Try a rough grade sandpaper or emery cloth and make sure you support the pipe as you clean it. Any kind of grease will do, even chip fat if thats all you've got LOL ;) :D ;D ;D :y

OK this is the sort of advice I need before doing it, normally its the sort of thing I hear after I have broken something, I will perhaps use wire wool then, would that be ok?

Steel wool is perfect, BUT, after spending a while under the car, you may think it was better if you replaced the pipes. Yours got an advisory this time, in a year they will be a year older & it would be a shame if they failed. I would be planning on replacing them at your leisure, either now, or in the spring.

I would advise using sandpaper and then coating in underseal/waxoil as this provides a nice think coating that us testers are not allowed to scrape off/remove.
To fail the pipe wall has to be reduced by 1/3 of its thickness so unless the corrosion is heavy you should be fine (the pipes are quite tough so i wouldnt worry to much about damaging them.

there is a cleaner u can get to do this, or as kim and aggie would say warm water and abit of vinigar with a tespone bicarbonite of soda and gentle rub it in to the pipes gets them looking like new, and if there are bad pits in the pipe you will see them its the safe way.

right use a rough emery paper lightly on them, if you break through, they were no good anyway, if not lightly smear black cv grease on them. ive done mine for years like this. its the same as motorbike spokes! if theyre not rusty then its ok!
