Title: Just changed my sump by torchlight in the rain!
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 03 December 2007, 17:45:32
Last time I did an oil change, the sump plug thread knackered on me. At the time, I Was desperate for the car, so I used a nut and bolt in the sump to keep the oil in  ::)

Since then, the oil has been getting blacker and blacker - I have constantly put it off, but I've now had to bite the bullet, because it's been 5k miles since the last oil change.

My new sump pan arrived at Vx today - so it was time to fit it.

In total, it took me about 45 mins to remove the old one, and refit the new one. Had to give the old one a little bit of a persuading off, but it wasn't too bad.

I wasn't sure of the torque for the lower sump bolts, so I made a sensible guestimate of 10nm when refitting - felt about right. I wasn't paying £40 odd for a new gasket just for a little sump pan - so I used some of the oil cooler grey sealant on it. I find that works well on sumps.

I seem to recall Mark saying that the drain plug itself only needs to be 10nm with the rubber o ring on it - so that's what it had. I will always use my torquewrench on this plug, I don't want to strip another!

(Although in fairness, the last one wasn't my fault...)

I popped a new oil filter in, and I've filled back up with oil, fired it up - job done.

I then moved the car to the other end of the road, because I didn't want any of the neighbours to see the rather large oil stains were from my car  ::) - I cleaned up as very best as I could, but you just cannot do this job without dripping some oil!

All the time, it was pitch dark, so I was working outside the house by torchlight, with the rain absolutely lashing down, meaning I was lying in a bath of cold water. So a messy, cold, frustrating job, but hey it's done.

I'm going to do a few 500 mile oil changes, to get it back to being nice and clean again...

Bath and beer now :y

Maria just ruffled my hair, and quickly withdrew her hand - 'cos it was covered in used engine oil. She's now tutting and wiping her hands. Quality  ;D

Well done for contemplating car work in this weather! Was going to clean mine this weekend ::) .. again!

Still, that oil ought to stay clean for a while on LPG?

Kevin

I'm sure it will - at least I'm now in a position to change it when needed, and I don't have to be so careful over speed bumps  ;D

Thanks mate... I would feel a lot more committed if I had a nice warm heated garage for such jobs, with a hydraulic lift  ::)

It'll be spring before I venture under my car.  ;D

PS What kind of torch?  ;) Maglite held in your mouth or a LED headlamp?  ;D  ;D

It was a little rubber torch that looked like it came out of a cracker, and had less light than a candle. And yes, I frequently held it between my teeth  ;D

You'd need a snorkel & flippers to do anything outside here today. I'd considered a job on the caravn aerial today but, ..... didn't! ::)

Dry but windy - the oil blew sideways half way while draining

I paid my local garage £20 to change the oil/filter last week........while it was up in the air......got them to check for oil leaks........none found from engine........slight weep from g/b......but nothing to worry about.......but they did notice water staining around hbv and from another joint in a pipe close by......joint looks a bit like a donut thingy  ;D ..best how i can describe it.

Not sure if connections are weeping or its the hbv  :-/

Well done on changing the oil pan James  :y
I nearly changed my plugs and air filter Sun morning..........but a cold wind and spitting rain i decided it can wait  ;D

Really need to change the oil in tractor, but I've stripped the thread. Again.  In the 9 months I've had this car, thats 3 sumps I've stripped (or were previously stripped)

I was in Woolworths the other day & bought one of these (http://www.woolworths.co.uk/web/jsp/product/index.jsp?pid=50919209) (http://www.woolworths.co.uk/product_images//13/58/31/13583146.jpg) At the price I thought it was well worth the money. Work I bought me a Petzl head torch that was very similar apart from the £50 price tag. It's certainly better than a torch between your teeth when you're under ther bonnet/car
