Title: Coolant leak - the saga continues
Post by: Gaffers on 16 October 2009, 19:13:46
Well so far I have resealed the oil cooler plate, the thermostat housing and the HBV.  I have checked all the other pipes and none seem to be leaking.  I am now looking toward the Coolant Plug.  Whats the deal with this bad boy?  Is it heads off time?   :'(

Guffer, have you put a new O ring on the transfer pipe that runs from the radiator drivers side to the back of the engine under the coolant bridge? It is a pain in the rear to get to but it maybe worth a crack at it, new dowty washers will be needed though too on the coolant bridge :y

Where is your water leaking at the back or front?
The reason I ask is I have seen Core Plugs at the back in between the Dispack, butr have seen a few at the front with none at the back :-?

They all have core plugs on the head rears but....just whip the heads off and I bet the gaskets are goosed.

Fairly sure its from the back but the car has been away for a few days so I will be able to have a good look tomorrow, might get a mirror down there or try the coolant pressure test technique   :(

Hmmm well if what you think is true then I have 3 options:

1.  Project heads off (once i have the new Miggy on the road) with a total head refurb
2.  Scrap it and make some money
3.  Rad weld ;D ;D ::) ::)

I beleive Jimbob went with 3 for a while, but eventualy number 1 prevailed.

Thing is I have already gotten myself a decent fixer-uper which once sorted will be my main car.  The current one will prob be sold anyways so I dont wont to spend too much time sorting it nor do I want to sell on a bag'o'shite.....

I guess its a question of weighing up which option is most viable. No idea what can be earned from breaking an Omega. Seems alot of agro to me though.... Or, have a heads off party instead. :-)

3 worked while it was 'just' the core plug.
when the HG followed, no amount of radweld will help.

very handy to have a 'Mark DTM' in my toolbox though  :y  else would have been scrap i'm afraid
