Title: 2.6 Elite rattle from rear underneath ?
Post by: ianu on 16 October 2009, 22:01:53
Hi all,
Anyone point me in th eright direction for what appears to be a rattle coming from somewhere behind the drivers side rear wheel underneath (at tickover with the drivers door open you can hear it quite clearly). It sounds like a sort of relay'ish type clatter - but random rather than a ticking pattern - it quietens down if you increase the engine revs and returns as you drop back to idle.
I must admit I haven't noticed it from cold - but usually after a run - or when everything still seems to be warm. The car does have Xenons - so was wondering if it was anything to do with the self levelling suspension - or is their a fuel pump or something tucked away under there that could be worn out ?
Any pointers would be much appreciated before I start removing wheels and crawling underneath with the engine running ...!

Thanks
Ian.

Where abouts in Oxfordshire are you? I'm in Kidlington...4 miles from Oxford city centre. I could always take a quick look if you'd like. I'm no expert, but know enough now to hopefully be of some help. I've got a 2.6 Elite aswell. It always helps to compare to other like vehicles.

only things behind there are shocks and spring, if its rattling when the car is not moving it could be a snapped spring. But then that would not change depending on engine revs  :-/

Check exhaust mounts and heat shield.

Thanks Tunnie, Joshwyatt (I'm in Bicester - just e-mailed you).

I'll have a poke round - exhaust shield sounds like it might fit the bill - cheers - looks like the wheel will have to come off to get a good look.

Thanks
Ian.

Noise can be deceptive (sounds like its in one place but comes from annother ) , rattles and changes more when you rev.  Check out all the clamps and fitting on the exhaust system.

Mine had the same sort of tingling rattle at idle, turned out to be the exhaust 'just' touching the rear axle at the drop link rod bracket. I tried to align but to no avail, ended up with a piece of heater hose between.

All is silent now. :D
