Title: Auto lever jamming
Post by: Kieran on 20 October 2009, 18:45:58
Hello all
When trying to get my car out of park and into drive every now and then it will not move even thou i have my foot on the brake >:(. I have to lift the trim from around the base and manually move the lever to enable the autobox to select. Now from what i can see there is a solenoid at the base which seems to push the lever out of the way to enable gear selection. It is my guess that this is what is causing the problem. Has anyone replaced this and how difficult a job is it. :-?
Many Thanks

More likely to be brake switch, up behind brake pedal :y

I will have a look. Is there much involved in replacing it.
Thanks for your quick response :y

Pretty straightforward just awkward access once you`ve removed the under-dash trim by the pedals. The new switch has a plunger that needs to be pulled out to meet the pedal in order that the brake lights and cruise will work.

It's not difficult. The new switch has a collar round the plunger just for transport (it's been a while  ::)) IIRC you just pull the plunger out till it meets up with the arm at the back of the brake pedal.
I lost my cruise for a while cos I'd not fitted it proper to start with ..... but i soon found it when I adjusted it  :y  :y

What ^^^^^ Rob said!  ;)

If this was the problem thou wouldn't the brake lights and cruise not work properly yet they are :-/

Lights and cruise still work

Just checked the lights and they work but not the lever :-? It makes me think it is the solenoid at the bottom of the lever

I'd not had a problem with either myself, but a new brake switch sorted being stranded at the lights in PARK  :-[  :y

If you think it`s the solenoid put a meter on it, press the brake pedal and see if you have current to it. I still stand by dodgy brake switch

Now i am getting confused. Surely if the lights and cruise work the brake switch would be ok. I am reluctant to buy a part fit it only to find it is not the problem. Been down that road only recently with the Senny. May have to go to the scrappy this weekend and borrow  ::) a switch from one of their wrecked Omegas.

Make sure you get a similar switch. They're not expensive new IIRC about £20  :y

Looking at the wiring diagram it appears to me that the switch has multiple contacts internaly ... so one bit can easily fail and the others keep working.

If you have access to a multimeter, disconnect the solenoid, attach the multimeter, pres the brake and see if you get a good +12 volts .. if not the switch is probably goosed. If you get good volts then its probably the solenoid itself.
