Evening All,
I have been looking at buying an omega estate (I nearly
bought one yesterday except for 'issues' with the seller
regarding 'unknown' faults) that he must of known about.
Anyway, I have been to look at a 1998 3.0 Elite today which
i'm interested in but it has a couple of points I would
appreciate any advice on. I've posted the first in the
electics section but the other concerns an engine fan ?
Anyway, when you start the car from hot or cold you get a
loudish noise coming from the front N/S wing of the car, the
seller says its a fan coming on and it cuts out after approx
20 seconds but to be honest this is the first 3.0 i've looked
at but all the 2.5 & 2.6 I have looked at didn't make a noise
on startup. Does anyone know if the 3.0 has an 'extra' fan
and if so should it be noisy ???
Thanks for any advice.

my mv6 makes the same noise, i must replace it. noisey bearings on the fan motor thats all. ;)

SAI PUMP I would say, sounds like a hair dryer , normal thing on startup to warm up cats

Thanks for the replies,
Do all the Omega's have the SAI pump ?, it's just as I said
the other engine sizes i've seen don't make this noise ?
Thanks

All the earler V6's have the SAI pumps, just unplug it, it's not major if it's not working :y
-
they probably just have quiet pumps, my other 4 didnt make this noise. :y all v6

Yep, I had a 2.5 with this problem, sounds just like a hair dryer going off.

Sorry for the ignorance but what's an SAI pump?

Secondary Air Injection.
It is used to warm up the cats in the exhaust quicker - all to do with emissions.
Simple answer - unplug it as there not needed really.
They weren’t even fitted to the later 2.6's + 3.2's - so that’s how important they are! ;D ;D

You can also remove the SAI pump assembly from the n/s front behind the bumper, and the pipework with one-way valve (that usually becomes 2-way at some point) from under the bonnet. Saves weight and gives you a bit more room in the engine bay.

I do have a similar problem but when the car is hot. So anyone knows what needs replacing (some bearing or similar)??
-
As others said, its likely the SAI pump. This is fitted to all petrol 2.0/2.5/3.0 Omegas. It comes on for around 30s when starting from cold to help heat cats for emissions purposes.
When working correctly, its audible, but not intrusive.
When the bearings start to go, it gets embarrassingly noisy - replace it, or simply unplug it (not required unless you are a real tree hugging greenie (in which case an Omega isn't an ideal car for you ;D))

TheBoy any idea about my problem mentiones in this topic?
Car is 2.2 so I guess no SAI pump

no sai pump on diesels or petrol 2.2/2.6/3.2

ok no SAI pump so I guess the noise is from some bearing in the rad (ventilator bearing)?

fan bearing noise should be easy to pin down by unplugging (briefly!)
