Join a recovery organisation (asking for basic cover which is peanuts), wait 48 hours, call chosen recovery companies breakdown line, request lift home.

Already covered by RAC. Just hoping somebody might help salvage some of the holiday but thanks for your advice.
Simon.

HG replacement is a days job at best, more so if you need to send the head away to be skimmed. Did it over-heat?
-
No overheating issues. Just lots of white smoke and water loss. I think the gasket has just gone, so engine and head are (or should be) ok.
-
enjoy your holiday Simon and worry about the car when you get home. If your in the Rac your laughing get your feet up have a beer
-
I'm going to get the car recovered and Daz is going to sort it for me......
-
You off to cornwall then Daz?

Double check what cover you have, sometimes they will only tow you to the nearest garage to fix it.
-
Thanks for the tip Tunnie, but my daughter works for the RAC, so will make sure it all goes smoothly.
-
Aye, its not 'what you know' it 'who you know' ;D ;D :y
-
Are you sure its not HBV valve
-
I am a bit old school on mechanics.... what's an HBV valve?
I'm getting it towed straight to Loo-knee so he can sort it for me.
-
HBV is the plastic bob behind the block it routes water to the heater matrix / engine block, its a common failure point.
Feel behind the engine for it, its black and circular shape.
-
I will check in the day light but is it a difficult and/or expensive job. It sounds better than a blown head gasket
-
Update is RAC refused to tow it all the way home. They got a quote from a local garage which was £350 to £400 to do the gasket. Daz was £250. The RAC has agreed to pay the balance of the bill. They say it's cheaper than tow charges. The garage was advised we must have the car back on Friday pm ready to go Saturday. They said no problem it will be with us Thursday afternoon.........
It's now Friday morning but still no car though a friend passed the garage yesterday afternoon and the car was on the front running with a mechanic working on the engine.
Fingers crossed! :-/

Please don't say that..... :o
Car is now back.
Gasket went on 1st cylinder.
Couple of exhaust manifold studs snapped and were drilled and replaced, head was skimmed and new head bolts fitted.
All appears well, and it drives well.
Total bill was:
Parts - £ 92.39
Labour - £255.00
Total £399.50
£250 paid by me and £149.50 paid by RAC.

What it is to know people in the right places!!
I thought it was "Not what you know or who you know - but what you know about who you know!"
Had an Auntie who had a place in Perranporth, and spent many happy weeks there. Sorry about your mis-fortune.
-
About to leave for St Agnes in about 30 mins. Hope not to have same problem as you exepreinced.
Back in 1978 my landcrab Austin 2200 6 cyl decided to blow the engine when I was down there. New short motor fitted in one of the old mine workings near Wheal Kitty.
-
Hope that you have no more problems! it's a long way back there if you get home and find somethings wrong.....
Darren

Yes - this is a regular 260 mile each way trip for me - my wife's family all live around there - Trevellas, Truro, St Agnes, Mount Hawke, Idless - a bit like rabbits I think. We just have 2 kids!!
