Title: Trip Computer accuracy and Head Gasket woes!

Hi, just got a 2.2CD and wondered whether to believe the TC on the subject of range. I ask because the fuel gauge has a mind of its own too.
Also does anybody know the approximate cost of parts for the head gasket replacement and skimming the head? Is it always necessary to do the waterpump and timing belt as well?
It hasnt gone yet, but Im wary of this as I had a Rover 820 Vitesse and it proved costly. Thanks

Hi Bod, the range is normally fairly accurate as for your fuel gauge, could be any number of things making it show different levels from battery to which way it's parked on a hill.

Head gaskets are best brought from VX, find someone local with a trade club card for a big price drop. I always change the waterpump on the 4 pots with the timing belt.

the range function uses same electrical signal as the gauge, so it depends why gauge is incorrect.

i had the HG done on my 2.2 and it cost nearly £900  :o

Estates will be more dodgy under Range less than 30 miles left, different tank design but uses the same MID / Gauge settings, been caught out a few times when parked up and wont start again.  :-[

Thanks people, I guess I'm learning more as I drive it as per its readings ie uphill,downhill, parked on a kerb etc and the T/Comp has begun to tie in with the gauge. I guess the discrepencies may be because its been stood for 6 months and its beginning to losen up a bit. I shall be wary at around 40 miles and get to the pumps just to be safe.

Knowing a friend who is a mechanic, he had a guess at around £300 tho thats without costing new stretch bolts. Thats purely a price for a friend too and it could get to £400. Thanks for warning me about the price, it sends shivers but pity the poor Fiat Coupe owner who got charged £2300 just for the belt change...

The car only cost £200 (I know, I cant get over it either) as it was a part ex in a garage but now I'm waiting for the catch. Thanks everyone, wish me luck!

on top of the red line on petrol, should be 12miles left at todays prices, 109.9 :(

My 2.2 is pretty accurate as regards the trip computer as for the HG i would cost in having your cam cover gaskets and breathers cleaned first as these will almost definately need doing if its had poor service history. A good coolant flush would also be a good idea could all help in stoping that HG going :y

Rover 820s had a well known design fault causing head gasket failure - usually shown by big oil leak front of engine passenger side.  Needed mod'd HG + removal of restrictor in oilway in block to cure.  Don't think Vx has similar inherent design fault.

With Vauxhall, you have to use the correct anti freeze as it has inhibitors in it to stop the HG corroding. Don't be tempted to skip the A/F....
Vauxhall Red seems to be the weapon of choice

never had any problems with either of the 820's I owned like every car there are always rouge ones due to poor servicing etc

Had my old 2.0 CD facelift done, and cost £520 all in, inc new cambelt etc etc

That includes labour though too....
