Got to love my car.
Well for those that have helped me in the past, here's a quick update to my Mig that is poor on MPG.
Right today I went off to a couple of site visits, first in Hindhead, then down to Chichester then Home (Southampton)
Driving to Hindhead at a steady 65 the Mig was doing her usual 18mpg. Going up hill drops to a poor 12 and down hill it's up to 35. Nice. :y
Leaving Hindhead to Chichester the EML came on. I looked at Father in Law and mentioned we may have a problem. :-[ It drove for a few miles with the EML lit, then it went off. Then to my surprise the MPG went a bit mad. :D Now I was like a kid in a sweety shop. 32mpg on the flat. Uphill 24 and down hill well 999.99 was possible.
Reset the MPG counter and when I got home she had averaged 29mpg :D
Have not paper clip tested it yet as it was a bit dark and cold when I got back. Will do it in the morning.
Any thoughts. Is the calm before the big BANG :P
-
could be the engine speed sensor, but should look with paper clip test. :y
-
There's a surprise. Something else wrong with the Mig. :'(
Paper clipped and codes are
37 & 89
I have never owned a car that has had so many problems in such a short time >:(
Still whatever these codes mean, at least having them knackered the MPG has gone up 8-)
Omega ownership. Never a dull moment. I'm kicking myself now as I should have forked out the extra £500 for the Lexus 400 I had my eye on. God knows this Omega has cost me more than that in parts and fuel :-[

Cant see a code 37 :-/
31 No Engine RPM Signal
32 Injector Valve 6 Voltage High
33 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve Voltage Low
34 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve Voltage High
38 O2 Sensor 1 Circuit Voltage Low
39 O2 Sensor 1 Circuit Voltage High
89 O2 Sensor 2 Open Circuit
IIRC Sensor 2 is for bank 2 of the engine (cylinders 2,4,6) which is the passenger side.

Does a 37 have anything to do with me brake lights. I know the ns one is always intermttant at the moment. Just checked and found to be off again. After a tap it's now back on. Loose connection, so something else that I will need looking at.
As for the o2 sensor, I wonder if this has been the problem all along. Don't understand why it should now show up as a fault when papaer clip test c/out today.
I have lost count all the tests I have done with a paper clip.
Also when you have a fault is the EML meant to stay on, or as it done yesterday, stay on for a few minutes then go out ::)

Failing sensors (or corroded connectors and damaged cables) can give misleading readings for a while before they get so bad that the ECU detects that they are actually faulty. I guess that is what has happened to you.
I think the paperclip test only talks to the ECU. I don't think it will give you any codes from the MID (which monitors the tail/brake light tests)
-
I'll check again on the paper clip test to check if i'm getting mixed up :y
-
:-[ oops...see it pays to check again
it is a 73
:y
-
73 Mass Air Flow Sensor Voltage Low
89 o2 sensor
So what does all this mean then ;D
-
I find that counting the lamp flashes is a pain but the paperclip is the cheapest tool in my toolbox :y
I don't know if the list of error codes is complete. Someone may pop by later and tell us that 37 is a valid code.
If you don't have obvious physical damage (frayed cables to your lambda sensors perhaps?) you might save yourself time and money by contacting Kevin Wood and getting him to plug your car into tech2 for a diagnostic session and expert opinion.
-
Andy, sorry re done test...its a 73 not a 37....oooops :y
-
I need to type faster.............
Mass flow meters do fail.
Cheap replacement ones are a false economy.
I don't know if the lambda sensor is sulking and might perk up again if you fit a new MAF.
I don't want to mislead you with a simple diagnosis (but hopefully it is a simple fix).
If you can get to Kevin to have tech2 plugged in he will be able to see live data which will be much more informative than paperclip codes and inspired guesswork.

Gotta laugh
Just took the MAF of the car and had a good look at it. Looks a cheap enough component so I phone VX. :y
£265.65...... ;D
Well that did make me smile. My old man comes up from Cornwall tomorrow in his Omega. He is the main reason why I brought this car as he goes on about it all the time. I can't dispute that either. They look great and drive lovely. Apart from having ( it's probably just my car ) HBV break, Crank Sensor Fail, O2 Sensor go up the spout, and now a MAF all within a few months, i'm feeling fine and dandy. :y
I have a lovely Sledge hammer in the back of the van and I am now thinking this Omega needs putting out of its misery. :'(
-
or £30 on ebay for a new pattern maf :y
-
Are they any good though.
I'm going to pop up Silerlake ( Scrappy ) to see if the 2.5 Omega they have there still has it's MAF.
Failing this though, I would be tempted to get one of ebay. Even if they only last 6 months, I could buy 9. :y
-
Just got back from the scappy. The only Mig they had was completely stripped >:(
Couple of 2.5 Vectras and a Calibra. Also missing MAF. :'(
Car drove without fault there and back. So it can all wait.
Anyone used an EBAY MAF yet?

I have, and it lasted about 2 weeks before my EML came back on. Only cost 30 quid though, I'll try another one. Other people on here have tried them with success though :y
-
Cheers.
I think I can give £30 a go on an Ebay MAF.
Just one more point. Should my EML light remain on.
As I pointed out it come on for a few minutes yesterday, then went off, and has not relit since. I know these error codes stay untill they have around 20 clean starts.
-
Does it light when you put ignition on? If not, could be the bulb blown. If it does, I wouldn't worry about it too much at the moment :y
-
there is a scrap yard on e-bay cannot remember his name but he has lots of parts, he dont list a lot but would give him a call, dose good prices think he sold 3.0 engine for £90 and bloke could not praise him enough, and that was droping it of for him, he usually advertises as omegas breaking for spares. :y
-
Have you tried contacting any members on here for a MAF? Plenty of members breaking cars :)
-
I would contact Darth Loo- Knee or Markey Mark and ask if they have a known good used genuine MAF for sale. :y
And then buy the Lexus 400. 10 times the car an Omega will ever be imo. Apart from mpg and servicing costs. ;)
-
I have one here mate for a v6...can take the one off my car and send it to you for £20 delivered and put the spare one on mine so you know you have a goodun :y
28-30mpg on a run is about right for a v6...my 3.0 reports its averaging 34mpg on a 200 mile trip!
