Title: Steam coming from rad?
Post by: baz1701 on 10 November 2009, 18:54:19
Today's topic of contention is my rradiator seems to be using a lot of water and is steaming a little. Temp gauge is hovering between 95 and 100 for the most part. have checked pipes for leaks but nothing, no obvious leaks from rad, but manily at standstill after a few seconds rad steams.

Have put a lot of water in in last 2 days, only noticed it on Monday morning.

Any ideas?

If its any alloy rad get the core replaced to a copper brass its sounds like the aluminium is corroded

Is that expensive...?

it can be cheaper than a new one the only problem is finding some on that does this now.
copper/brass is far better there is a company here in falkirk that does rads they done a senny auto rad for me 6 years ago for £50.
The  origanal rad ends are re-used I could find out how much it would cost the only snag is they need the old rad.
you could try a breakers usualy take £30 -£50 for rads.

Also posted on another leak thread .. :)

Old trick that "might" just work ... get some bright yellow food colouring and add a decent amount to the coolant, run the engine from cold whilst watching the suspect area closely .. hopefully the yellow colour will help spot the leak.

Did the food colour test. No leaks to be found, so the mystery deepens

I'm wondering if the rad is running too hot when running and boiling my water more than it should.
