On my prefacelift you had a dial which you could move from blue to red to control the cabin temperature without having to switch on the heater or a/c. This dial is not on the facelift and for some reason it has started to annoy me. (I also preferred on the prefacelift you just pressing the a/c button whilst still on 0 fan speed to demist the windscreen)
Even on my old 5 series you could control the temp. by an inbuilt dial on the air vents (one blue dot up to 3 red dots). Is there a good reason why this feature has been ommited from the facelift model?

Not too sure what you are asking... :-?
The controls you describe is not climate control, just simple heater or basic A/C.
On the facelift, if you press in the drivers temp button and release, adjust the temp to what you want then press in and release again - it adjusts both sides, not just the one.
Eco button drops the A/C and gives basic Mk1 heating control.
Left upper button (opposite spacing to the HRW/rear demist button) gives front demist.
What else you asking?? :-?

Page 126 onwards if you don't have a manual to read ... :)
And the Climate control is absolutely brilliant, constant temperature and no misting up at all ... :)

Maybe it is me getting lazy in my old age as my main gripe is that in my prefacelift i would move the red/blue dial to the desired level and whenever i drove i didn't need to touch a button.
Thanks Hotel21 for the tip on changing both sides.
Thanks Entwood for the link but i can't download pdf files on my laptop. (Must do that adobe download!)

I know where Radar is coming from.
I drove a 1994 2.5 V6 CD for 6 years which had the manual dials.
Because the coloured strips behind the dials were breaking up they occasionally stuck under my finger nails (ouch >:(). Despite that I could always get comfortable :)
I thought, when I picked up my 2003 elite 3 months ago, that I was looking forward to a life of comfort. I feel quite let down :(.
I spend more time changing the settings to try and get comfortable with the climate system than I ever did with the simple dial controls. It seems to be fighting me rather than giving me what I set it to.
I find the fan noise infuriating. I very rarely used to turn my fan above speed 1 but the climate control seems to go to full speed for no apparent reason.
:-/
-
If climate control is set to auto it will go to full speed to try to achieve the temperature as fast as possible.
Turn the climate on without auto button and set it to desired values and it should stay that way

I agree with you Andy (you explained it far better than i could). I have also had the climate upgrade done which admittedley does improve the smoothness of the fan speed but is still not as smooth as i would hope. Whilst i'm moaning i feel the facelift has too wide a centre console (starting from just beneath the front ashtray) and this restricts how far you can spread/stretch your legs.

Eh? Its same dimensions of pre-facelift! :-/
As for temp settings, there is a nice dial to set the temp to exactly what you want, 19/20/21 degrees and so on.
If you like the old style so much, sell it and buy the older one.

Same as the prefacelift and minifacelift climate control. Chap has/had the basic rotary dial setup previously.
That said, i prefer the climate setup rather than the rotary dial. Generally have it set at either 19 or 20, with aircon on, so as to ensure the cabin demists quickly (not that the inside needs it - quite dry...) and the fans don't go ballistic, despite the latest aircon software... :)

I usually leave it in 'Auto' for the first 5 mins or so, bring the temp down. Then manually override with a lower fan speed. Once its brought the temp down, i find the slowest fan speed keeps the temp the same, without all the noise.
Winter i find its practically silent, apart from the first initial warm up.
Not sure on Radars comment on leg room, in the 3.0 Auto i have bags of room for my left leg, and i am 6ft4!

Your 6'4" legs are skinny.
Some folks have short and stumpy tree trunks like me.... ;)

Still plenty of room with the old man pack auto, if you opt for driver involvement version, leg room is less, but still good. Although i get lazy and tuck my feet under the pedals with the cruise on :-X

I can just go by my personal experience and comparing the two my left leg/shin area could be rested further to the left on the prefacelift (I'm 6ft 2 and 16 1/2 stone so i might be a bit wider than some). These are very minor gripes but if a nice prefacelift came my way i would consider it.

Did the climate system have many software updates? Mine is a 2003 Elite (so I assume has the final software version) and the fan does 'go ballistic' quite frequently. >:(

Yes, the climate updates make a big bifference to usability :y

I agree that the dial is nice. Unfortunately the control system behind it is rubbish.
It takes too much notice of the outside sensor and the solar sensor and not enough notice of the space I am sat in. I have done a lot of miles in it in the last 3 months (approaching 6000). On long journeys where I have started on warm afternoon and finished in the dead of night it is noticeable that it increases the temperature in the car as the outside temperature drops. Even more noticeable is how it turns the cooling up if the sun land on the solar sensor.
-
I have to say I also find the climate system on the facelift very annoying at times with a certain amount of uncontrolability despite having had the climate upgrade. I usually have it set both sides to 22C and if the outside temp is around 12C it blows out warm air for a while but as soon as there's bright sunshine it starts blowing cold air and I have to uncrease the temp settings to compensate. I also find that the fans speed has a mind of its own even when auto is switched off, and demisting is crap unless the A/C is on.

Is there a way that I can determine which update my climate system has? or is tech2 the only way of interrogating it?

tech2 is the only way.
iirc Kevin found another parameter you can adjust he says further improves things, can't remember what though...
