Title: Strong smell of diesel inside the car
Post by: Welung666 on 11 November 2009, 21:04:49
Only started last night. When I first start there is a strong smell of diesel inside the car, it fades a lot but I can still smell it throughout the journey (3 miles to work). I changed the leak off pipes a couple of months ago so unlikely it's those causing it. Any suggestions on where to start looking?

I've no idea whether the diesels have a similar tank arrangement to the petrols, but this thread comes to mind as possibly being relevant:

A possibilty, I'll check that out. Although it seems to be coming from the vents so I'm edging towards an underbonnet leak.

leak-off, leaky injector, fuel pipes, either at injections or at fip, fuel filter

Had a look in the light of day.... fairly dry in the injector wells (5 & 6 are a little damp though) and all dry below. Seems to be a wet strip between the starter and block heading downwards but can't really see without dropping the plenum chamber off. I don't fancy doing that as I only changed the gaskets Saturday  >:(

Pulled up from work this morning and there was a lovely circular oil slick on the wet road where I turned around ;D ;D So I had a closer look and it's definately coming from round cylinders 5 and 6, injector side. I'll have to have the intake plenum off again in the morning to actually find it though. The odd thing is the lower part of the head that I can see with my mini maglite is bone dry, it's on the block that the trail continues downward.

have you checked the feed/return that goes through the m/fold or cracked injector feed pipe to 5/6

That's what my money is on, very strong smell under the bonnet with just the ignition on. I'm stripping it in the morning but I've got to go up to Lincoln tomorrow lunchtime  ::) bl00dy typical ;D

Well I'd have lost my money ;D ;D

I changed the leak off pipes just over a month ago, the end plug on injector #6 was new too. Stripped the plenum off and what do I find? The end stop was swolen and loose so the fuel was just pouring out of it! Replaced it with an inch of leak off pipe with a very tight bolt. Problem solved :y
