What are you on!?  :o - We have no idea if its the rad yet, even so i would never recomment radweld, i have seen its affects. It does more harm than good.

seosamh DO NOT use radweld.

Firstly what engine do you have? Manualy check the rad for any leaks, visually inspect it, take it out if needed. Check the coolant expansion tank is ok as well.

What ever you do, DO NOT put radweld in your rad!

This is a bodge and might work for a while but will need repairing properly sooner or later. I would say the car is a 2.2 DTi if it has the heater under the driverside wing. I think there is a bloke on Ebay thats breaking a 2.2 DTi think he's also a member on here so might be worth mentioning the forum if you get intouch with him.

My V6 was "repaired" using radweld type stuff, in a previous life.

The problem is now - I want to actually repair whatever is leaking - and cannot find it, cause it's masked with radweld.

I would have to echo tunnie's sentiments - it's OK on older, simple cars - but not really suitable anymore.

Totally agree, do not put radweld in. It killed a previous Lancia I had (although to be honest the car was a total hypochondriac anyway so it would have died of natural causes anyway... ;D :( ;D :( )
The area of your coolant loss is easy to work on and to achieve a "proper" fix.

The problem is it creates a thick silt type mixture, and in the fine tubes of the Omega rad, it blocks them up causing over-heating issues.

Would be fine with really old rads which tubes the size of a smarties tube, but ultra thin mondern ones its more harm than good.

a mechanic told me he could bypass  this preheater thus saving the coolant loss....is this a good idea?

No, prove its the HBV leaking by feel / looking, and replace.

I would also suggest only ever considering radweld and the like as a very last resort.  Find the leak and replace the failed component is the only real fix I'm afraid

Make sure you plug the diesel pipe properly though! You don't want a leak or create slicks for bikers now do you? ;)
