Title: Can anyone help me im getting an ear bashing!
Post by: neil.gale on 14 November 2009, 21:40:57
hi all,
i recently purchased a vauxhall omega 2.0l 16v auto after alot of minor problems i thought i was in the clear till last week i was sitting in traffic for about 30 minutes when the engine management light came on about 5 minutes after this it went out along with the radio, electric windows, mirrors, sunroof, interior lights, speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge and temperature gauge along with the fan on the radiator then 5 minutes after that she overheated and left me my wife and 3 kids at the side of the road not happy to say the least after calling the rac and being hooked up to a diagnostics machine i was told there is an open circuit and the man said that a plug has PROBABLY come off the back of the clocks has anyone ever heard of such a thing? and is this easy to resolve?
Neil.

No it wasnt me in rotherham!
He did remove a relay  under the bonnet and short a circuit to get the fan working so i could drive home.
All the fuses are intact i checked and so did mr rac
he seemed to be convinced it was a loose plug as he kept bashing the clocks and dash with his fist and did say he would try and stick his arm up behind the dash to see if he could locate it but didint i have tried this but not had any luck :(
How hard is it to remove the clocks?
is it something i could do myself? dont really want to pay someone to put a plug back in if it is as simple as it sounds. :y

if the windows and sun roof went with it would not think it was the cloocks, more like a main volt wire before it gets to the fuse box, dose the display still work?? is there any thing working?

Quite straightforward if you have a tilting steering column. Instructions here http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152618876

Its easy to remove the clocks, I belive only 4 screws and the only plugs i can think of are on the computer display. here is a link for the How to do it

I would also say do the paperclip test and see if it gives you any codes, if it does post them up and we can help with them Here is the link for that.

Have a look and see if you get anything.

dose the speedo drop when you start the engine, should drop down a bit, if it dose then there is power to it. :y

With the tilting column it is (apparently) quite easy.

My last car didn't have a tilting column so I had to remove the plastic cowl on the column before I could get to the bottom retaining screw on the clocks. Once I had the clocks unplugged I couldn't get them out from behind the wheel.  >:(

If re-seating the clocks fixes the problem then  :y

I ended up
- disconnecting the battery (within 15 seconds of switching ign off)
- removing airbag using long torx bit (a short one won't reach the screws)(allow at least 1 minute {some say 1 hour} after disconnecting battery before unplugging airbag)
- undid centre nut and then used steering wheel puller to remove steering wheel (and forgot about the big spring behind it so it hit me on the nose {again} >:()

Having said all that I think your problem is going to be caused by poor electrical connections or a faulty alternator or battery NOT the instrument cluster.

you shouldnt need to remove the steering wheel.
Just take the colm cover off thats 2 / 3 screws from the bottom and 2 screws from the front then you can get the top part off no problem. no need to disconect battery.

Rule Number 1

Never take what a roadside assistance tells you as gospel.

Rule Number 2

If more than one thing fails at a time.....suspect a fuse!

had a similar problem on an astra last week. changed the alternator nothing on the dash worked. couldnt see a blown fuse but took each one out one at a time and put them back in again. after i did this it all worked and has been since. I cant explain why. Hope this helps.

A really mature diagnostic technique this wookie technician has!

If the cooling fan failed and caused it to overheat it will be nothing to do with the clocks. I suspect a fuse has gone and taken out most of the instrument panel along with the other items and the  cooling fan relay feeds. Fuse 15 rings a bell.
