Heres a funny thing.
My Elite went in for it's MOT today and failed on tyres, 3 of them. The old MOT runs out 16th December so I was going to get it forward dated.
Anyway..they are doing the tyres tomorrow BUT tonight I took a look at them and in fairness the 3 culprits seem to have at least 2mm of tread left.
Are they right to fail her on the above basis ?
-
Only if they actually measured less than 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the tread width with a depth guage and not an uncalibrated Mk1 eyeball/fingernail.
Remember the wear bars come in at 2mm, not the 1.6 legal minimum....
-
My wifes 307 went for its first MOT recently and the ringpieces at Arnold Clark gave an advisory for 3mm tread depth.
T'was a wonder you didn't hear me from where you are. Miffed? Just a tad. Its their way of boosting figures with VOSA, I reckon. >:(

MOT on mine was done in May ,and it has a 'near legal limit' for my rears.... the car has done 5k since then, and there is still 3mm on both minimum across the tread width.

The 2mm I'm refurring to is BEFORE the wear bar..
This can't be right surely .....
I think its a wangle....

If you have 2mm plus the wear bar at 2mm then thats a 4mm tread depth. They start life new with approx double that, ergo tyres are only half worn!
If they failed for that the I most certainly would not be giving them my business to replace them.
Further, I would contact VOSA and ask one of their testers to examine tyres and fail cert and comment. They (VOSA) do not want the (relatively) good name of legal testing tarnished any more than it already is. ;)

From the testers manual... http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_410.htm
Tread
A tread pattern is the combination of plain surfaces and grooves extending across the breadth of the tread and round the entire circumference.
The tread pattern excludes any tie-bars, tread wear indicators, or features designed to wear out substantially before the remainder of the pattern, and other minor features. Grooves that had not been cut as deep as those containing the wear indicators when new, are not to be considered as part of the tread pattern.
D. Breadth and depth of tread
1.6 mm tread depth
1. Check the tread pattern over the complete circumference of the tyre. Check also that the tread depth meets the requirements using, as necessary, a depth gauge accepted for MOT testing.
1. The grooves of the tread pattern are not at least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising:-
. the central three-quarters of the breadth of tread, and
. round the entire outer circumference of the tyre
Note: Each side of the central band of the tyre can be devoid of tread (ie. ‘bald’) and still meet the pass.

Check inside/outside edges for excessive wear
-
okey...Just popped outside to have a little feel around, my court case comes up next Tuesday.
Ignoring that....the tyres DO feel a little bald on the inside edges but i still think they are legal.
OOOOOOOO well. ! New car, new tyres I guess..Bugger !

If you can still see/feel the original tread pattern, even if its only a vague outline and not measureable, they should be a pass. Tyres should also be without any sign of the constructional cords, or have any cuts larger than 25mm or 10% of the sectional width down to the base cords.
were 2 of the 3 fails the front two?
-
Yup, any sign of the cords and its a failure
-
if you have excessive wear on one edge it may well need some set up attention. Or the next set will go the same way. Mot aside, the car will not handel well and if the wear continues on one edge while the rest of the tyre looks ok an eventual blow out is possible in extreme cases.
In short, car may have excessive camber or simillar dialed in. Investigate the cause, wishbone bushes or shock replacment are classic, then get it set up. See wheelsinmotion web site or similar. Full geometric alignment, just tracking is no good.
-
Yes. Two of the tyres are on the front.
I'll get them to check the wishbones although they weren't a fail...twas just the tyres. They look almost as if they have been reversed on the rims. The back two, one of which has only done 3k look to be ok...

Mot testers rarely spot failed wishbone bushes in my experience and from what i can tell on here. Or they are quite often missed, put it that way. If they're original defo, or over 4 years old to your knowledge, may need new. Any slop, play, cracks or splits in the bush, replace. Be aware there is a guide and a very important torqueing procedure to prevent early failure.

Thank you...

My friendly MOT man gave me an advisory on my two rear tyres. Now I never mess about with tyres, if they need changing I will always change them QED. So I had a look and they looked ok to me so I asked him what was wrong. He said that they were aproaching the wear markers and so only had about 10k miles left on them. So what, says I, that's another four or five tears motoring!!! I thought they were worn/cut/bulging or something. Fortunately he saw the funny side of it.

I get a feeling I was put on this earth to get my local MOT Tester's failure figures up >:(
Going to start a poll soon on what he'll fail me on this time around.....
