Title: Fuel economy & Display
Post by: Neil (Cardiff) on 19 November 2009, 23:46:14
Bit of a strange one - I tend to drive quite economically (or so I thought :P) but I've just bought this 2.5 Auto and the display says I'm doing around 15-19mpg through town. This (as expected) goes up drastically when using cruise control on the motorway.

My question really is are these really that accurate? It's just 15mpg sounds ludicrous to me! I have to admit the car is a bit of a shed so I imagine it isn't running very efficiently but still, 15! :P

Thanks

they can be out abit, if you put a reader on it should see if there is a fault, some times the speed sensor has a bad connection and dose not read all info, can check this by av speed on display, rest it a few times wile driving making sre you check speedo and av speed are the same. :y

Stopping and starting the MPG soon drops down, so around 19 doesn't sound far wrong to me being honest. If you put your foot down you can see 7mpg ;D
The other thing there is an Instant MPG (think it says instant :-?) which shows what your doing at that time, plus the Actual MPG which will tell you what you have done over your trip.
So have a look at both mate, so people dont reset the Actual one so they get an idea of what MPG they have got over several thousand miles.
Hope that helps :y

Yeah thats what I've been thinking. The car only cost £250 - I'll have spent that in petrol by the end of the month  ;D

Yeah I've seen 7 a lot! I think it's just a big inefficient engine with a slow auto box to be honest. Anyone know of any cheap n quick fixes to maybe improve things a little?

Give it a service and make sure the breathers are clean to start with :y

Thanks, I will give it a go when I get a free hour. Any tips? The only Vauxhall I've ever worked on was a '77 Viva  :P

Will start with an oil change I think, I think its been in there about 10yrs!

If so breathers will definately need a good clean, there should be a How To in the Maintence Section mate :y

Erm this might be totally unrelated, but when I start the car from cold I get a bad hissing sound for about 30secs - I assumed this was the "engine check" but could this be something to do with the breathers?

Where is the hissing coming from?

I'd be guessing something to do with the sai.

I've got to be honest, I've no idea, under the bonnet but thats about it. I didn't think anything of it, thought it was normal. Oops!

Doesn't make a hissing noise though, well don't think so.... more of a humming or buzzing :-?

Sorry SAI? I haven't really thought anything of it so I don't think its anything too sinister. The engine light is showing code 73 MAF sensor (which is basically the automatic choke?) so I'm thinking the whole car just needs a bit of a clean up inside.

Hmmm better get the op to check under the bonnet for snakes then. ;D

Sai solenoid is opened by engine vacuum for the warm up period so I was thinking a leak on the valve itself.

Without being rude .. if you are seeing "7 a lot" then your right foot is being pretty heavy !!! and THAT is the major cause of low mpg !!

It's a big car, with lots of inertia, and trying to "boy race" will use loads of energy (fuel) ... a more sedate, gentler driving style would probably give far better fuel economy.

A blast every so often does no harm .. and seeing off the odd chav is good fun .... but in general .....  :)

SAI - big fan/air pump under nearside front bumper blows additional air into the exhaust manifolds for about 30 seconds after the engine starts to give an initial bit of heat in the catalytic converters. There are some fairly soft rubber hoses connecting the air pump to stainless steel pipes on the manifolds. They can split and make a loud hissing noise. I think they also hiss if the hose clips are missing.
