I can't work out which joint is giving you grief. Is it one of the ones in this picture?

I think he mean`s the Pitman arm on driver`s side ::)

It sounds like another Ball joint from hell.
I had a problem with mine, I used a bar, a bloody big hammer X2 and a joint remover, nothing worked, so I sprayed a lot of rust remover and wd40 and left it over night, the next day it just about fell off itself.
so spray a load on it and try tommorow.

oh dear.... ::)
but lets face it.....Rusty, you got us all confused mate.
steering idler is pass side, the one on drivers side on steering box, that aint coming off in a hurry. if your changing steering idler you dont need to touch it.
-
no is the idler, have the tracking arm off but cannot get the arm off that is connected to the idler, like the pic from andy h, ive taken off that one and other one will not move used iron bar, impacked hammer, spray, cannot get at it with ball spliter even heated it up, have tryed not removing the the trackng arm but it was just bending it and dont wont to buy a new arm, im thinking about grinding a line in the idle arm at the ball end then hiting it with a hammer and chiseil. should losen it up so can get it off. have to see tomorrow if it not raining.
-
its ok now got it off, cut slit in it and hit it with chisell and hammer 3 times and it poped off, grinded a slit from east to west about 8mm, no damage to the shaft at all,
is there any way to repace the rubber on traking as noticed that the rubber is split?, any thanks for your help :y

So youve taken two steering idlers of the car? :-? :-?
I was confused a while back as it appeared to me that there was something on the drivers side which looked very much like the Steering Idler. :(
RobG has just mentioned the 'Pitman arm'. This is the first time I've heard of this.
:question Does the Pitman arm look similar to a Steering Idler and is it likely that this has also worn if the Steering Idler was worn?
I actually changed my Steering Idler yesterday (for the second time after BuyPartsBuy sent me a cheap duffer)....and what an improvement! Anti roll bar bushes and cruise control stalk today, donut bushes next weekend, then off down to WIM for a full geometry set-up. :y

I wouldn't worry about the pitman arm on steering box, you will not have to change it. There was once a guy who did change it though, took about 3 days to get it off, and didnt fix the issue anyway. Poor lad.
It links the steering box to the middle control arm, the bit inbetween the track rod ends. The idler is similar but not powered, hence its "idle" i guess ? :-)
If you look in between drivers side door and wheel you ll see it at the bottom of the steering box.

no just one, pass side, it seems to be the original one, so getting new one this week. and have to re paint the car wear the iron bar i was pushing on it to remove the ball joint has taken off the paint, and see if I can get a new rubber cover forthe ball joint. but happy its off. :y

I once had to change the 'drag link'* on a Carlton because of play in one of the ball joints.
*Names I use for Omega steering components
1. Steering wheel (hopefully we can agree on that one ;))
2. Steering column
3. Steering box/power steering box/recirculating ball steering box
4. Steering arm (on steering box) (apparently also called Pitman arm)
5. Drag link (bar that links steering arm and steering idler)
6. Track rods (one each side from drag link to an arm on each hub)
Has anyone got any better words to describe the steering components?
