Title: Crank sensor on its way out?

Got a phone call from the old man last night, he said his 2.5 was revving on its own up as far as 5000rpm but went away after a while. Havent had a chance to look at it myself (not in this wheather anyway). Is it early signs of a crank sensor?

Its a 1998 gls and there's 97k on the clock and AFAIK it still has its original sensor so that must be a record ::)

Petrol or diseasal?

The classic cause of diesels 'running away' is oil carry over from a blown turbo seal. :o :o

Nope, it doesn't have a moustache and its not called Brian ::)

AFAIK the crank sensor only ever causes a lack of go not too much.................

I would start by cleaning the idle control valve and breathers.

No, Crank sensor failing symptons are the engine dieing, not restarting. then 10 mins later start ok.

I would be checking / cleaning the throttle body / butterflys
