I have noticed over the last couple of days that i seem to be getting exhaust gases coming into the car, this happens if heater blower on or off
The exhaust does not seem to be blowing anywhere (cant hear any difference) and there is no build up of gases when i open bonnet, thanks in advance Des :)

Hiya. camshafts/cover seals perishes .
Oil leaks unto exhaust manifold and other hot places
and this causes the smell of exhaust fumes . :y

Thanks for reply, but they are not leaking mate.

Try blocking the exhaust with a handful of rag with the engine just ticking over. You should feel the pressure build up and the engine will try and stall, release the rag to release the pressure if it builds well. If you have a small leak you will hear it hissing and the pressure will not build up so much.
Disclaimer : :) If you have a weak/damaged/tired exhaust this check can be terminal, as the pressure MAY just blow the weakness completely .... DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!

Is the rubber seal on the boot in good condition?
I have had old estate cars where fumes from behind the car came in through a poor seal. Probably not such a big issue with saloons though (you don't say which you have).
Has a breather pipe split or fallen off?
Has the recirculation flap stuck in the recirc position? (or has someone pressed the recirc button & not noticed?)

I was thinking about the recirc but button not on mate, pollen filter a bit dirty and was full of water till i cleaned out the other week, but would this smell of exhaust fumes? its weird it only started a couple of days ago :(

I had this problem too and it turned out that the Breather system was choked, particularly the very tiny hole in the breather box top. Whatever, its worth cleaning out antway. Sod of a job though!
