Title: Is the diesel pump failing?
Post by: Glassback on 06 December 2009, 14:07:24
I am having trouble starting when the car has been left standing overnight. I have changed the crossover injector seals and the leak off pipes but I an still having trouble. The car is a facelift 2001 2.2 tdi cdx. I am wondering if the pump is failing, is there any way of testing it without having to re mortgage the house to pay the VX main stealer.  :'(

turn ignition on and listen at the fuel tank you should here fuel dribbling back to the tank.
you have to be quick it shuts off after 5 secs
don't start the engine or you won't here anything.
i'd put money on the glow plugs if the main pump die's its all stop you won't get any warning

I have a TD and had same problem as you. First check the glow-plugs, if they been on the car for approaching 100k then they will be getting tired.
Does it start ok when warm? If so then change glow-plugs first, cheap and easier to do on the DTi, so I'm told.

If I dont hear fuel dribbling back to the tank, does it mean the pump has thrown the towel in?

I think the 2.2DTi id different, it only has the injector pump and not a seperate fuel pump like the 2.5TD. Have you checked the fuel filter and housing?

I'm not to sure i know the 2.5td has 2 pumps one in tank other injector.
there might be a third pump under or around drivers seat area(under the car).
i once had a fault like this in a pug 406.

I have replaced the fuel filter and housing, and I have just had a quick test on the glow plugs, I dont think there is any power to them but is is hard to tell on my own. Could there be a fault on the glow plug relay? if so where is the relay located?

The glow plugs on a TDi don't come on until the temperature drops to a certain level but can't remember what it is.

Just been to my VX main stealers, he says there is no pump in the tank. Tried starting the car yesterday morning, it fired up ok. but only ran for a few seconds then I had to crank it till the battery nearly went flat before it started again. Is this a symptom of failing glow plugs? It was parked on level ground btw. So last night I parked it on the drive facing down hill, and this morning it fired up and ran ok. I am thinking there could be air getting in the fuel line somewhere, I have had a good look but found nothing. Tonight I shall park on level ground, just to see if it fires and runs ok in the morning.

I would say there is an air leak.

After being parked on level ground last night, it would not start this morning. There is one of those in line primer bulbs on it. I dont know if the previous owner put it on or if it is standard. So I tried to pump some fuel through but I am getting nothing, the gauge is showing plenty but it could be wrong, it seems as though the tank is empty or there is a blockage. I am really Pi$$ed off with it now. Almost at the point of putting a hammer through it

The priming bulb pump thingy should have a one way valve fitted so if you disconnect the end of the bulb closest to the injector pump and give it a squeeze you should get diesel from it.

If the glow plug circuit is anything like my old 2.0 DI Vectra, then it doesn't kick in until around negative temparatures...

I disconnected the primer bulb and was squeezing till my arm dropped off, but got nothing. The gauge was showing just below a quarter full, not quite in the red, I can some times run it for a day when the warning  light comes on, but as I say it was not on. So I shoved another gallon of fuel in and did some more pumping. Finally got some fuel through but is was Black, so maybe that's where the trouble is. Looks like tank off time. And I shall have to have a look at the sender gauge as well, are they repairable / expensive? :'(

I am going to take the fuel tank off first chance I get, can anyone tell me what's involved, ie. does the exhaust have to come off etc? I have looked in the maintenance guides but found nothing. Car is  2.2 tdi cdx. saloon facelift. thanks.

Not the worst job in the world.  You shouldnt need to completely remove the exhaust, just drop it off its rubber mountings to give a bit more space.  The tank is held to the car with two metal straps.  These should have 1 bolt at each end.  Check around the tank and find the filler in the rear drivers side arch.  Disconnect the jubilee clips and loosen the pipes.  There is a breather pipe as well, dont forget this.  Support the tank and remover the straps.  I found a decent sized sheet of mdf sat on a trolley jack works quite well.  Lower the tank slowly without letting it fall off the jack.  You will need to disconnect the fuel lines and wiring, although this could be done through the inspection plate in the boot.  That should be about all you need to know  :y

Good luck with it

I never knew the 2.2 had no pump in the tank, if you still have the inspection hatch, then you don't need to drop the tank. The filter must be cleaned, mine was as bad on the inside as the outside. I used one of those cheapo syphon pumps, to get rid of all the sediment in the tank.

Many thanks for all your help, I did not know there was an inspection plate in the boot till I read a few post's. So when I checked, I thought to myself I may just manage without taking the tank off.
