Well, as much as it pains me to have to do it, after an embarrassing situation in my local Asda this evening I am going to have to bite the bullet and get a new battery. (Only money reasons have stopped me getting one earlier tbh)
Looked on a few sites and most are saying the same thing, there is a changeover in 1998.
Up to 98 they used an 096 battery and from 99 they have changed to an 017 battery.
Mine is a 99/T 2.5 Diesel, which is the same engine they had in 98 (thats what I thought anyway) so what do you think is the right battery???
It currently has an 064 battery fitted which doesn't correspond to any lists i've seen.
Thanks as always.
(By the way, im waiting for my ABS VX Trade Card but only sent the forms off yesterday and don't think I can wait for them to get to me so trade club is out for this purchase. Thinking of using www.carbatteryshop.co.uk, anyone got any better suggestions????)

I have a 2.5 Petrol and much the same embarrassing situation happened to me too. Must be the cold weather killing all the batteries!
Anyway I never have any money :P so I put on a battery I took off a Rover 400 (only a 1.6L) years ago and it's brilliant. Turns over lovely.
So basically I wouldn't really worry about the exact battery type as long as it fits, the terminals are the right way round and it has enough power, especially if price is an issue.

The correct battery and in good condition is critical for the 2.5td lump. :y
-
+ and - with enough amps to turn a turbine backwards n u will be ok

Customer gave me a battery he didn't need anymore a couple of weeks ago, it is a proper GM battery (063 I Think?) but it is quite literally half the size of whats on it. I could see that going bang in a big way had I used that ::) ::)

I just checked mine and its an 019 with 850 CCA and 95 Ah reserve capacity.
It is huge and just fits in the space provided - had it for 3 years no problems - got it on the cheap from Halfords.

You cannot get anything wrong if you put a more powerfull battery in the car ( okay not tice as powerfull) but you MUST NOT put a less powerfull tan the minimum stated in the post above. Several reasons for this but the first one it simply will fail soon
-
Anyone near you with TC that can help you out this time?
I'd shove on the one recommended in the TC book, and remember it will get worse as the weather worsens, so do it soon :y

Sorry, but this may not be true !!
You have to ensure that the alternator and charge system electrics can match the demand for charge from a larger capacity battery.
Cheers.

How does that explain trickle charging then?

In the end I opted for the 017 battery. it has the following ratings,
Capacity - 88Ah
CCA(SAE) - 750A
Starts like a different car now :y. Brought it off Ebay im afraid but they were the cheapest around, under £55 delivered. ( I realise the vx ones were not far off £65 but I needed one a bit quick and couldn't wait for my trade card to come)
Says it a Varta although im pretty sure it isn't, but comes with a warranty and the seller had 100% feedback.
I may regret it in the long run but money was by far the main concern, it works brilliantly at the moment and thats got to be better than what was on it.
Thanks for everyones comments.
