Title: Water Leak
Post by: downsmen on 15 December 2009, 22:19:14
I have a leak which is using about a 1.5 litres a day at the moment.
I am not sure where it is but i have noticed a water stain just behind the plenum at the back of the engine, it looks like its coming from near the top of the engine has any one any ideas where its coming from as i dont want to strip the engine down till i know where the leak is.

check the HBV (heater bypass valve) its a black circle looking thing, which is designed to shunt water to the heater matrix / engine cooling depending on a vac pipe. This is a common failure, if its wet around there, replace it as per guide in maint section  :y

it could be the seal on the stainless water pipe that bolts to the back of engine mine failed when the oil cooler went just picked up the seal from vx it's an o ring part no v0009128362 and they cost with vat 3.98 . i may be wrong as i am new to the omega but mine did have staines coming from the pipe :)

you can buy an o-ring kit for that much.

Pretty well guarantee that it is dreaded Heater Bypass Valve that is the culprit as it is THE most common scource of a water leakage showing where you say it is.
They are not that expensive so do yourself a favour and use the genuine VX part, the after market clones are crappy and don't last.

Hi all,
That's interesting - I have a similar problem too and have just changed the HBV as the first most likely suspect  (great guide in the How To section). BUT I still have a leak dripping water from exactly the same area underneath - is this likely to be the seal that Sparten mentions ? The oil cooler was changed recently by the previous owner less than a year ago (13k miles ago). Is this a big job again to fix - or another knuckle grinder round the back of the engine like everything else ? I'm losing about a litre a fortnight..

Cheers
Ian.

Must be the time of year for it.....

I had the plenum off mine last week and went all over my HBV, dry as a bone. I did spot wetness below the inlet manifold on a pipe that appeared to go into the oil cooler cover plate, is this the stainless pipe people are referring to?

Coincidentally my oil cooler was replaced about a year ago as well......

I dont have the HBV as its converted into an Astra but i get a leak that seems to drip down the side of the heads (which would be the back of the heads when in the omega) im sure i read somewhere on here that its something down in the V of the 2 heads thats leaking, anyone know what it might be and if there is a guide here?

I'd like to know as when i take the inlet apart i would rather do it there and then and could do with knowing the gaskets/o-rings i would need before hand

could be mine was dripping down on passenger side underneath over bellhousing by oil filter and it is a bit fiddly to get off as you have to undo oil cooler pipes to get access to one of the two bolts that hold it on,allso if you take it off alltogether then take off driver side manifold heat sheild you can take the breather box off for a good clean :)

Just got to the bottom of this on my car - apparently one of the plates that make up the oil cooler assembly was cracked hence leaking water down the back of the engine. The garage fixing it have pointed out that it looked like it was damaged when the oil cooler was replaced by the Vx Dealer as it had a load of gunge sealant round the nut where the crack was (the plate is very thin around the flange that the nut tightens up on).
At least I now have a spare HBV assuming that it's only a matter of time before I'll need to change it again anyway.. :P.
Hopefully all sorted until the next leak - wherever that might be.
Cheers
Ian.
