first off check the ATF level

Did you get a warning light come up on dash?
or now if you start car?

Tunnie is probably right with the idea of low ATF, however, if the gearbox got hot enough for smoke to be pouring from it, I think I'd be looking for A N Other gearbox. An auto 'box rebuild can easily cost £1000. :(

If the gearbox is toast, be much cheaper to ditch the old one and bolt a new one in. AR25's are plentyful, and should be no more than £100 or so
Might be worth posting up your location :y

Hence my comment re A N Other rather than a new or rebuilt auto 'box :y
