Title: Rediscovered a cut wire on Engine today
Post by: Varche on 03 January 2010, 22:20:55
While I was working on the passenger side of the engine today I rediscovered a cut wire - black, thick core inside of single wire? . Presumably a defunct sensor.

Question is which one? It goes into the front of the engine just behind the timing belt cover fairly low down just below the top hose inlet. When you pull it and let go there is a metallic clump so I suspect the other end isn't "connected". What was it? How can I tell that a new one was fitted in its place? Could it have been a faulty knock sensor that was just cut out and never replaced?

Sounds like it could well be knock sensor.

You got it in one! 99.99% it is the knock sensor wire as your description of its internals fits. I have repaired mine sucessfully because it was caused by being trapped and damaged after being re-located after a repair job in the wrong place. Common fault I am told. I have done well over 10K miles since with no problems.
My best advice would be to re-join the 'cut' ends and see how you go. The cut was probably not intentional because if a knock sensor fails there is no point in cutting the wire because it would have no effect whatsoever. If a knock sensor stops working it just stops working, exactly as if it had been cut!

Rather dissapointingly it was the knock sensor. There is a working one bolted to the side of the engine. Shame. I was hoping to find it wired up but not bolted.

The hunt for the tractor performance goes on.........

So is there a correctly fitted knock sensor connected to the ECU? Otherwise, I would understand if it was gutless.
